Trade 422 for 22A

I'm not much on auto pistols,I'm a SW wheel gunner for 50+ years. I did buy
a 422 because it was light and shoots good. I don't carry it very much. Any
way a "friend" has a 22A that he has been pestering me to trade for my 422.
I have no experiance with 22a. I have herd they have problems and it's a
bigger gun than 422. What's the dope on the 22A? My 422 is in mint shape,
the 22a is in the case like new.

From a strict value standpoint, the 422 is worth way more than the 22A. However, I am at the point in life where "if I ain't shooting it regularly, it ain't worth nuthin' to me and something fun to shoot is worth more than nothing".

The SW22A is a good gun, one of the least expensive mainline rimfire semiauto's worth mentioning in the same breath as the Ruger Mark series or Browning Buckmark. I got one back in January and put about 1k rounds through it so far. During the first outing, I got a couple of jams which I expected as a lot of owner's said would happen. Since then, I've used Federal Value Pack and Lightning, Winchester bulk, Blazer and Remington Golden Bullets and they all fed and shot perfectly with zero malfunctions. I would expect a used gun should either work or be a lemon. The nylon buffer gets worn out, but is replaceable and allegedly S&W will send you some replacements for free.

I doubt that there is much of a used value on the 22A, but there is some on the 422. The 22A is a great shooter and should be quite reliable. It's plenty accurate for plinking. I got a $20 Red/Green Dot sight on Amazon and the whole setup is a ton of fun to shoot for very little $

As others have stated, it would be a good trade for your friend from a value perspective. You would be leaving about $100-$150 on the table.

If you don't care for the 422 you would be better off selling it out right, and buying something that you do want.

Having been a owner of a 22A I will say they are a good pistol for a beginning shooter or even a experienced one as well. The 422 sells for around $400.00 to $500.00 here in Canada in good shape used and the 22A sells for around $275.00 used in good shape. At least you know the value difference this way and can decide from there.

422 vs 22A1

I have and shoot both my 422 and 22A1. The 22A1 is heavier and feels solid in my hand. The 422 being lighter and with no optics is easier to carry in the woods. I read on the Forum today that the 22A has been discontinued. If so it will go the way of the 422 in pricing.

About 20 years ago i bought a Model 41 brabd new and paid at the time $450.00 i still have the bill in mi files and now i see that they are worth $1350.00 so what is the real value of a gun, i think it is to the owner to decide what kind of money he is ready to pay for the gun i just gave an account on a 22-A1 talo version and i had to pay $430. for it. with all i reed in here all i expect is to get it cause it seems to be out of production.

my 22A was replaced by S & W last fall because the frame cracked. The replacement gun was running great till the last range trip it jammed ever other round I have not been shooting sense so next time if it jams it will go back to s & w.

Alright I've read all the replies to this and am very curious. I purchased a 22a-1 about four weeks ago and have only had trouble. Ftf, Fte and jams over and over again. The only ammo that I can shoot a full magazine through is CCI mini-mags. I would be hesitant to call this a good gun, but yet others here have. This is my first .22 pistol and I wanted something lighter on ammo than my LC9s just to play with at the range. I'm getting ready to go tomorrow to look at the Marks. Reading on here that some give a good review makes me think that maybe mine needs to be returned? I purchased new, have cleaned it regularly and have tried Federal Match, Remington Golden Bullets, Thunderbolts, CCI hollow 36 grain and CCI mini-mags 40 grain. Again, the only one that will shoot through with a full magazine is the mini-mags. Any input would be appreciated!

Ruger Mark III or 22/45 are both nice guns, but a bit difficult to field strip. I would love to have one of either, but arthritis says no.

I've fired the 22A-1, but the owner is a 22 competition fanatic, and does extreme maintenance, so his run like tops.

Also look at the newer M&P .22 compact. Mine does not like Federal Lightning/ bulk or American Eagle, but burns through Rem GB, thunderbolt, blazer, Mini mags, and CCI SV like my hemi burns gas. I even got 95 of 100 Rem sub-sonics through it after a good break in (I buy and try to shoot what I can find). At 5k rounds it had to go back for a broken takedown lever, but that's it for problems.
