Trade or not?

Question--should I limited the number of mag loads in the no dash for any reason?

A few dash numbers later some changes were made to beef up the 629. Don't remember exactly want they were. Anyway, no point in beating up the gun or yourself unless needing to shoot a grizzly or similar.

in my experience, a hasty trade decision in need of outside advice is likely one that will be regretted at some point. If you can't be 110% sure it's the right thing to do on your own, I'd find another way to get a 4" 44 .

I would make the trade as long as the serial number range of the 629 no dash is not in the N910000-N953000 range. That's the range of the recalled cylinders for .44 magnums. The only way to know if it's been previously checked is to have the box. You can call S&W but they apparently didn't keep the records of each of the recalled cylinders that were repaired. Now unfortunately the don't have the parts so after they magna flux the cylinder if it's bad they destroy the gun and send you one of the new ones, lock and all.

I was not aware of any recall. Do you have any details as to reason for the recall? I will check the serial number Saturday when I get the gun. I must assume that if it has survived this long it should be good to go. Thoughts?

YES! & QUICK!

if you don't like 44 mags it would be an easy flip for 2 shooter grades in a caliber you do like. Hot loads is why they made Rugers, even if only to test out the first few.

I would do the trade. Yes, for most purposes a 357 is enough gun. He stated he already has several. But, when did the actual need for a gun stop anybody from wanting one? Especially a nice S&W 44 mag. I used to favor the 6" guns, but the 4" ones are a lot better to pack around in a holster. I have a bunch of 357s, they seldom make it outside. The 44s and 45s are always going to the range.

I too would do the trade side by side to just examine the goods..
A 4"er to me is a useful tool where a 6"er is pretty much a range gun..

It sounds to me like both of you guys want the trade & I see no reason why it shouldn't be so..

Hit the range with your buddy afterwards, You'll both be smiling afterwards.. :) :D

I have 2 twenty dollar bills and I have a guy with a 50 dollar bill who would like to trade straight across for them, thoughts? Should I do it?

About that simple.

I like the way you think HEADKNOCKER. The only thing you left out is the ice cold beers along with the smiles afterwards.

Well I made the trade. Cleaned her up a bit and she looks pretty nice. The grips have 5 81 stamped on them and they have the silver washers. Serial number is N8508##. So I guess that puts it about a 1981 gun. The action is great and it locks up tight. Once the arctic air leaves us, maybe I can go run a few rounds thru it.

Nice 44!
The early 629s weren't recalled but they do benefit from having some of the internal springs replaced with stronger ones. A friend of mine bought an 8" barreled 629-2 a few years back that was in excellent condition but it tended to have a slight issue when shoot high end loads. The cylinder lock would disengage somtimes under heavy recoil of max loads which allowed the cylinder to rotate back a chamber. This meant that the next pull of the trigger dropped the hammer onto the previously fired cylinder. Didn't notice anything amiss during recoil but it happened often enough for him to contact S&W about it. They had him sent it back them to install an upgraded "recoil" package in it. It's been fine ever since but IIRC it cost him about $100 with shipping and all else.
I still think you made a good trade.

John
