Trading 30-30's

1966 100 year Comemorative & 1899 Mod 94.
I recently got the 1966 cycling properly. The cartridge lift spring had not been fitted properly and it was sending rounds flying out upon opening the action! I have hypothesized most of the Commemoratives were never given final finish fitting at the factory as I don't think the factory expected them to be shot - ever. I have looked at many Commemoratives and seen similar problems. Also when I first got the 1966 the lever would not actuste the trigger safety when closed and that required 'adjustment' as well.

If I tell you that I have 2 model 94 and one model 64 you'll have guessed that I'm more of a Winchester guy;but I will never try to start a discussion the kind of ''which is best,Marlin or Winchester'' because I know that Marlin guys have been bitten just as hard as the Winchester guys and is is more a matter of ''blonde vs brunettes''.
The only reason I do not want to start decorating my gun room with Marlins is that I know myself;I know when it begins but ignore when it'll end($$$).
They both are great lever guns!

In the 80's (1984 or 85) I bought an mid 50's 336 in 35 Remington. After a couple of years I sold it to fund something else. I still have ammo brass (I bought 200 once fired) bullets and dies. It had sold me on Marlins! I have had over 20 since then! One of the most remarkable was a 336 (Gold trigger) in 44 mag! Only made it one and a half years. It was so much smoother than the first year 1894 44 Mag I found shortly thereafter. I had 1 new and 2 used 1894C 357 carbines, both used ones were worn to the point they would no longer feed 38 Specials! (common problem!). I still have a 1894CL in 32-20, a 1894 CB 45 Colt Cowboy Special (will feed 45 Scofield too.) & an early 1895G 45-70 Guide Gun with factory porting.

I loved all of them except the worn out 357's! But some other cute gun caught my eye and off they went! (You just can't keep everything when you join the "Gun of the Week Club", the basement would be stacked floor to ceiling! I never bothered with Winchesters, the price way outweighed the benefits! Dad had one 94,30-30 with a factory Lyman peep sight from 1952. It would shoot silver dollars at 100 yards (at least dad could in 1972!) but after he died a year ago, his wife gave it to someone, not of our bloodline. (only modern Winchester I ever lusted after!)

You ready to offload that 35 stuff? ;)

I have owned and shot just about every platform in a lever gun. My personal favorite is the 1893 marlin with that said I have shot the rossi 30 30 ss well. The one I shot had great sights, making it easy hit a 18 inch plate with 3 consecutive 150 grain blue box federal ammo. At 275 yds,
With any new gun, you will need to determine what it likes, and where it shoots. If you practice with 150 grain. Then hint with 170. You are not going to get the same trajectory.
I can understand your desire for a marlin, they are great weapons,
Cowboys bought winchesters, because they were less expensive than a marlin.
Both were great guns,
Do t buy into the hype that a pre 64, will shoot any better than a post 64. If anyone wants to prove that myth, I welcome them to shoot against my 1971 NRA rifle

I'm a fan of Marlins, as my first (336) was a Christmas (1975) present, as I turned 12 the next year and it would be my hunting gun.

I have 4 Marlins (336's), all older pre-"Remlins", and no safety (makes as much sense on a lever action rifle, as it does on a revolver).

I also have 4 Winchester 94's, just to make sure that I know how the "other half" live!

6 of them are .30-.30's, 1 - .357 mag, and the last is a .44 mag.

For my money, some of the finest rifles ever made!

The only Rio Grande I ever fired was supremely accurate for a 30-30 lever! I greatly prefer the Winchester but that Rossi was a tack driver by comparison. I didnt buy it but borrowed it for a hunting season. Like you I hunt irons and this one had a Williams peep on it.
If one presented itself locally I would likely buy it in the sub $400 range. The wood is ugly on most of them but I know how to fix that.

I wish I had never sold the Marlin 336 in .30-30 that I owned over forty years ago. It was very accurate, a joy to shoot, and didn't have that damned superfluous crossbolt lawyer safety.
