What's up guys. Looking to trade my Shield for a J Frame. Looking to go back to revolvers primarily. What are youre thoughts on this and are any of you looking to trade?

I have both and like both. But, it's your decision and I won't argue against it. For me, the only reason I don't carry my 642 as a primary CCW is because of the ease of reloading - mag release, insert new mag vs. speed loading with strips or a speedloader.

I'd say you could've made a much worse decision. ;)

There's much to be said about the benefits of a J-frame. I've carried them for years, though I'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy my personally owned Shield (.45 version).

And no, you may not have my 649-3. :D

I have no interest in trading my J-frames, but I am curious what your reasons are for going back to revolvers if you care to share them.

For carry I'm a revolver guy (60-9, 642 & 66-1), so I can't speak much to switching. But I am looking to add what I call a true pocket auto to fit better with business casual dress. Will probably be a KelTech or LCP. Of course it's personal preference, but I like the way different grips can greatly change the feel and comfort (both carrying and shooting) of a revolver.

I think this would be a very neat trick. I just recently was able
to do like wise. I am very pleased with myself. I have a mint
M&P 40cal.M&P, in the case that I'm in the process of trying to make
a similar deal. But it is hard to find one person, let alone two
who would trade a S&W revolver for a Shield or M&P. But I'm a
guy that doesn't like the new generation autos reguardless of
make or model. Even at that, when you consider value, for the
money of a Shield, what S&W revolver could you buy, new?

Im really just partial to revolvers. I've got a 64-2 K frame that I carry and love it. I've also owned a 442 that I kick myself for every day for getting rid of it. I really just want to get out of plastic guns altogether. Love the shield but there's just something about stainless or aluminum or Carbon steel that speaks to my inner primal manhood LOL

I have both a Shield 9 and a 640 Pro. I rotate between the two depending how I feel. I must say though lately I've found myself carrying the Shield more then the 640. With the 7 round magazine in my weak side pocket I feel pretty confident with the firepower I'm carrying.

I love my Shields, 9, .40, .45 and own several revolvers including the Model 66- 4" and 66 -2 1/2" I carried at work for several years. I'm a firearms instructor and when asked I tell everyone to carry what they feel most comfortable with and WILL carry. Not one size fits all.

My wife carries a 642 in her purse because she doesn't like and isn't good with magazine/slide functions.

I carry one or two Shields and or a Taurus 738 in a cellphone type holster, depending on what I'm wearing. These days, cooler weather, usually the Shield .45 under a shirt, and a Shield .40 in an ankle holster with long pants. Whatever you carry, practice with it, another reason I like the Shields, easier to shoot more accurately, at least for me, over a J Frame.

I went from a Jframe 642 to a shield.
the Mass triggers are horrid, even worse on a revolver. I couldn't hit the side of a barn with my 642. I kept it for my wife , she shot 10 rounds through it and her finger was killing her. Now she shoots an SR22.
I'm pretty accurate with my Shield. I'd love to try a 642 with a 6 or 5 pound trigger. mine was 12(on every pull)
ya ....good luck with that.

Not long ago, I was actually a party to TWO trades involving S&W revolvers and contemporary polymer semi autos  .
Just recently, a guy on my local Armslist traded me a very nice Model 60 'ladysmith' .357, for a bi-tone XDS !! (it's a honey,I feel like I scored big time!!)
But, also recently, I traded the 642 Airweight 38 I'd been pocket toting for years, for a NIB Glock 42 (also a nice score, given what I had in the 38).
And, coincidentally, just last night I traded the G42 (and all the ammo i had for it, about 250 rounds), for a nearly NIB M&P9L, one of the newer ones that I'm reading were re-issued and run off for law enforcement and came with 3 mags and some Trijicons !!
I loves me some Armslist !! :D

Where did you get the cellphone type holster?

I feel the same way, often wanting to carry my SP101. But I've come to appreciate my Shield 9 as a great fighting pistol. If a gang is circling you and your family, you want speed and lots of ammo, and you don't care whether it's plastic or metal. Unless you're so cool under pressure and so superbly trained that you always hit COM no matter what, five rounds doesn't feel like enough to me.

I own several combat autos and really appreciate their power and capacity, but self-defense is about tactics. If you work out a plan...say: "I'll shoot two and move to secondary cover-shoot two and exit the AO-reload," then a J-Frame will work fine. The worst possible tactic is to "spray and pray." Sending out too many bullets increases the chance of unintended victims adjacent to the shooting. Better to figure out your actions in advance...

Doesn't always work that way. I really don't care if it's semi auto or revolver or why either one is made of but when you're surrounded......and it happens....there's not much of shooting and moving to secondary cover.i know I know....don't get surrounded. Also not always easy to do unless youre at home

I still love my M&P's including two .40 caliber Shields. But, I went to revolvers for EDC just because they speak to me also.

My usual carries' these days are a 2" Model 64-2, that I carry either owb or in my pocket depending on how I'm dressed, with a Model 637-2 as a BUG off body carry or in my pocket, again depending on how I'm dressed.

Can't argue with your decision at all. Now, if I know I'm going into a dangerous area at night, I might strap on my FS Pro Series .40 and use one of the Shields for backup, but that doesn't happen much.

Keep the Shield, save and buy the J frame then sell, or keep, one after that.

My J frame of choice is the S&W 640 no dash. Practice with .38 specials and carry +P.
