The wife and I are taking off for Arizona in a couple weeks. Thought we’d take a break from the Michigan weather and go back to Yuma for a while. I figured I’d throw these two in the motorhome for the trip.

681 & Browning B92 (357)

Gotta love those Browning B92’s, they are beautiful. The only downside is that it is so nice it has spent decades in the safe with just a modest round count of .44’s through mine.

t4halo, The 681 and B92 are legal in Arizona as long as one is not a prohibited possessor.

I've owned my share of L-Frames, and once had a B92 in .44. Both very practical and reliable firearms. Enjoy your trip..

Those Browning/Miroku/Winchester 92s are super nice little rifles. They may look sweet and innocent, but I am here to tell you, when a 158 JHP meets venison at 1700 FPS, it is all business. Perforate a coyote and they take a dirt nap right on the spot.

“Tactical” May be all the rage right now now. But anyone who knows their way around a 357 lever gun is extremely well armed.

I have experience with only three 357 carbines/rifles. A Marlin, a Rossi, and a new straight barreled Ruger 77/357. They’ll all put 3 shots into a 2 inch group at 100 pretty regularly. The lever guns have Lyman 66LA peeps. The little bolt gun has a 4X Leupold.

Thanks for all the kind words. Nothing better than hitting the road and having the proper packing list. I’ll take a few rounds of training ammo with me. It’ll be fun to plink in the desert again. Pop cans and rocks beware.

I love your choices. I know in Ohio all long guns must be stored in the vehicle unloaded and separate from ammunition. Because of that, I bought an AR pistol with a 10.5" barrel, yes with a brace.

If youre working in 2 weeks dont pull over any motorhomes headed southwest. On second thought I’ll take I69 through Indiana. Dammm sure aint going through Illinois

Those are some good choices for keeping you company on a cross-country RV trip...a lever action rifle is very effective and doesn't draw too much attention. We don't own a motorhome, but we do travel quite a bit in our Yukon SUV. I prefer to have a little more "punch" should the need arise, so I usually pack an M&P 10mm. The AR-15 8" pistol in .300 Blackout with suppressor (yes, it has an arm brace) rides along for extra reach and knockdown power. Of course, I tend to keep them under wraps. If we're going somewhere where certain firearms are frowned upon, I can always toss the Beretta A300 12 ga. in the truck instead of the AR. It stays low profile in a guitar case!

My travel (long) gun for our RV is expected to be the .357 Remlin that just came in. As much as I prefer ARs and did a lot of training with mine in my LE days (many Rogers classes), there are too many places where having/using one would cause additional irrelevant pearl clutching. After my surgeries, my inclination to shoot a 12 gauge is much reduced and a friend is considering buying it.

Pistols: likely my Sig 239; the PC Shield and my M66. As much as I generally tend to my Glocks, the magazine capacity issue is a risk in some places and reduced capacity mags are a serious no-go in Glocks.

I moved from Maine to Arizona last year. Mover wouldn't take ammo and I wouldn't put guns on the moving van so I put all my guns and ammo on the motorhome I rented. Went down the east coast to Kentucky then took I40 across the country to New Mexico, then shot down to I10 for the rest of the trip. This way I avoided all the anti gun states in the middle of the country. With this route once I hit West Virginia my Arizona was CCW was good the rest of the trip.
I really didn't give it much thought, just drove sensibly.

Some states will prosecute you if an 'unsecured' gun is stolen from you. Depending on how the laws are written and interpreted, locked doors may not count!
My RV does not have a very good place for a long gun safe.
I remove a necessary component from the gun and secure it with a cable lock in a very out of the way place.

I quit driving thru IL years ago.
I will drive 2 hours out of my way to avoid that place.

Not all of IL is unfriendly. Many sheriffs in the rural IL counties oppose the recent AWB. Some counties boards have declared the county as firearm sanctuary counties and stated they won’t prosecute the AW ban. About 30 (of 102) counties in the center of the state have recently passed advisory referendums to secede IL and join IN or IA. Chicago/Cook County, the Chicago collar counties, and the state capitol are the significant enforced areas. And the ISP patrols the interstate system. I’m sure at least some ISP troopers disagree with the recent legislation but the ISP reports to the current governor who pushed through the AWB as insurance legislation. So if you do travel through IL, particularly on the interstate system, check the ISP website for how a non-resident can travel through the state with firearms, particularly “banned” firearms or “high capacity ammunition feeding devices”.

The odds of being stopped if you don't drive like an idiot are very low. The odds of a search if you get stopped are also very low. Multiply the two (they don't get added), and you have a risk level that is hard to express, it is so small. They are also unlikely to be looking for gun; the N/S highways in Illinois (39/55/57) are major drug thoroughfares and that is out of what they seek.

Those are some very nice traveling companions.

My wife always gives me a hard time when we travel because I pack guns like shoes. Need an Airweight snub, a subcompact semi-auto, a high capacity semi-auto, etc.

I always felt naked going on vacation with
"only" a Kel-Tec .380 and 3 mags...
