We have been out on the road for 15 days now with likely another week or so to go. Went from home in Tucson to Albuquerque to Angel Fire NM where we stayed with our friends for 4 days, we slept in our coach. From there we drove mostly up I-25 to and across Colorado south to north spending one night in Cheyenne.
From Cheyenne we crossed Wyoming from southeast to northwest spending a night in Cody. Drove to and through Yellowstone entering at the east gate and continuing west to West Yellowstone where we stayed at a very nice RV park - Yellowstone Grizzly. Friday we drove south through and out the south entrance of the park and are now in Moran about 30 miles northeast of Jackson in a gorgeous RV park, Buffalo Fireside. We will be here until Monday and then probably back down through Jackson and out on 26 following the Snake River into Idaho before heading south for a two or three day run back to Tucson.
My bride and I are traveling in our 24' Nexus Class C towing my Indian Springfield in a 6 X 10' cargo trailer {14' overall and 8' tall}. Here are a few of our observations and thoughts:
The good, things are not nearly as crowded as usual but that is changing daily. While we enjoyed Yellowstone driving and riding the motorcycle nearly 700 miles throughout the park over 5 days. Every day the traffic got heavier and going south to the Grand Tetons the back up to enter the park northbound was approaching an hour or more though it being Friday may have contributed as a lot of visitors live close enough to visit for a single day at a time. Lots of plates from Idaho, Wyoming, Montana etc.
The places we stayed were all spotless and maintenance was thorough as they are glad to have guests once again. Every meal we have eaten for the last 3 months has been prepared by me and that won't change. We used hand sanitizer a dozen times a day and wear masks when entering any building. Folks are doing well being social while still distancing and the phrase "Happy Camper" is getting a whole new meaning.
The bad:
When Ron White famously coined the phrase "You can't fix stupid!" I am relatively sure he had just returned from a week in Yellowstone. We saw more morons than buffalo and in Yellowstone that is a very large number. A single buffalo along side the road and these chuckleheads just stop, right next it and start snapping pictures/selfies completely blocking the road. There are so many pullouts where you can safely get off the road and observe the wildlife from a reasonable distance but so many have to see how close they can get to the wildlife, Arrrrg!
The Ugly:
Other than the traffic in downtown Denver at one in the afternoon there hasn't been much ugly. Mostly gorgeous with breathtaking vistas out the wazoo. We did have 35 gusting to 50 for 2 hours coming out of Casper and snow flurries last Monday at West Yellowstone kept us in camp for the day but overall the weather has been great.
Yesterday we did a bike ride down to Jackson after breakfast and then some serious mileage exploring the Grand Tetons which are mind numbingly awesome by the way. This morning we rode east to Dubois, about 55 miles up and over the 9,568' pass where we encountered about a foot snow and 42 degrees... a tad chilly at 65 mph. Oh did Mention the 35 mph - gusting to 50 mph winds as we fought our way back over the pass? {not much fun for a while}.
We are and have been having an incredible trip. Will have well north of 4K miles on the coach and Indian by the time we return home... where they have been fighting brush fires and triple digit temps. Yep, it has been a great time to be gone.My pics are still being held hostage by Photo Bucket but I hope to get some added to this tale when I can get home to the mother computer.
Stay safe out there folks.
