I'm going to be going out of state soon, and once reaching my desination, I'll be staying in a hotel. I don't have a carry permit, but can I take my gun with me and keep it in my room for protection?

Check the laws for enroute and where you are staying.

How will you secure the gun in the room when you are not there?

You might want to reconsider that travel plan.

Some places make it a felony to possess an unregistered firearm. Mostly the nervous eastern seaboard states.

Other places (particularly out west) won't bother you if it is kept out of sight.

Gun laws state-by-state are available online. Check them out.

Absolutely, follow the advice provided above, check out each state's laws before starting your trip. I think Massachussetts still burns handgun owners at the stake. I hear California treats unregistered handguns more severely than child molestation. New York still has the Sullivan Act, which makes the Mann Act look like a fairy tale.

Be careful! Know the laws in advance of entering any state! Stay safe.

Don't forget nazi NJ...
Hollow Points will get you fined on top of jailed for weapons possession charges....
Even Federal "Peacable Journey" laws do not apply.

Having a permit does really help you in many states tho....

Are you certain that NJ law supercedes Federal law on this ?

To be certain that NJ does or does not currently comply with Federal Laws, I would suggest that you contact the NJ State Attorney General.
The laws and their enforcement can be fluidic at times...
