Tried to buy a gun at Academy-will NEVER make that mistake again

I like buying guns online with my credit card and get the frequent flyer miles. I usually get free shipping and don't pay any sales tax and my local pawnshop never has any waiting and they only charge 10 bucks for the transfer. It just takes a couple of minutes after I fill out the form and I'm gone.

The Academy here filed for bankruptcy years ago. The going out of business sale was noteworthy.

Got an awesome Leatherman tool for something like half price, and a pair of 4E (extra wide) New Balance "All Terrain" tennis shoes that I wore for years. Should of bought extra pairs of those shoes. They had them stacked floor to ceiling. NB no longer makes that style.

I have been in our Acadamy store one time, they advertised some 22 shells for a rather high price and I went by after church on Sunday morning and I went back to the sporting goods counter and they said you have to go to the service desk to get them so off I went and they did not have any, thats OK I will take a rain check, oh no we dont give rain checks well how many boxes did you have, not very many she said I have never been back there and I wont be going. Jeff

I've been to same academy, and guys behind counter have absolutely no clue when it comes to customer service.

Makes me so glad I am in Montana where all I do after filling out a 4473 is present my CCW and away we go.

Randy

PS. However, even in Montana there is no shortage of idiots working in sporting goods stores.

Abbreviations are "Paperwork errors" to the ATF'ers. I bought a Colt 6920 from the local WallyWorld and put St instead of Saint Cloud in the town name. Everybody (FedEx, UPS, USPS, I mean everybody uses St. Some shippers have programs that auto-correct Saint to St) uses the St. A week later the manager calls me at the house and asks if I can come in and fix it ASAP. I did. Joe

TRUE DAT!!^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^:D ( JOE IT WASN'T ME THAT CALLED:eek::eek:)

I walked out of a range just last weekend because of a similar attitude towards customer service.

To be fair, the only time I had serious fun buying a gun was when I was still a non-immigrant alien with a hunting license and buying during the Galyan's closing down sale. The guys at the counter and the Highway Patrol folk who actually process the NICS could not get their heads around me having a local DL, and therefore a resident of Nevada, whilst at the same time I was not counted as a resident of the US because of my immigration status.

I've bought both handguns and long guns at two different Academy stores. They are very careful with checking the paperwork. First the clerk checks it, then he has to get a manager to check it again. The process does tend to take awhile, but your experience seems over the top in terms of poor customer service. At least they have "gun guys" behind the counter here who really care about guns and about their customers.

I wanted a shotgun that Academy is the only American importer of that brand(Yildz). I checked 2 local Academy stores and they didn't have it but the Academy in Columbia did. I talked to the "gun" guy and he held it for for me. No more problem buying it there than anywhere else. They were a stickler on the paper work( had overlays to make sure everything was filled out correctly.) And they did escort me to the front door.

Sorry Caj. Academy here is pretty good, but there are a bunch of retired guys running it part time. Here a CHL cuts through all that and frees the dealer on their state paperwork although you have to fill out a 4473. It was not the firearm you wanted anyway. Whenever you are in town, I will take you to our Academy and the Rudy's Barbecue and the Top Golf next door.

It's not just gun stores. Aetna insurance called me three times this week to verify the same data. Two of the calls were today, an hour or so apart. The left hand knoweth not what the right hand doeth.

And their clerks are dumb sorts about whom I can't say more here. I think they were hired for PC reasons and because they work cheap.

And that is almost the rule today.

At least, their clerks were here, not in India or the Philippines, and they could speak English.

As for Academy Sports, the clerks generally don't know guns or ammo well. And I think that in fact they did tell me they couldn't remove the trigger lock until after the sale when I bought a CZ-75B there. I wanted to be sure it worked okay and was reasonably smooth. Thankfully, the gun turned out to be okay. No jams and very accurate.

Many dept. stores today have very few clerks. It can be hard to just get a sale rung, let alone get competent help.

Guns don't kill people - CAJUNLAWERs kill people !!!

I don't think we could find a bayou jury that would convict under these circumstances.

I've had really bad customer service every time I've been to my local academy. A few months ago, I almost had to beg the 19 year old half wit on duty at the gun counter to quit jaw jacking with his dirt bag buddy and help me find something. I now avoid them like the plague.

Chain stores don't care. Our local Gander asked more for used guns than new ones but they do mess up sometimes. A few years back they had a Marlin 336ER 356win NIB. Wanted $1499 for it. Every couple of weeks I would go in and asked for the manager and show him Blue book value. He say corporate makes the call on pricing. This goes on for a year and then my buddy who works there calls me and says they have marked it down to $499. I tell him I am on my way. When I get there, they ring it up and the scanner shows a Marlin 882 for $149. They call over the manager and he say that is what it rings up, sell it to him. Thank you very much.

Clearly you have not picked up a hunting license or purchased a gun at one of the Wal-Marts in northeast Texas. 30 minutes is a record time for such places. However, I would have thought Academy would be better.
