Tried to buy a gun at Academy-will NEVER make that mistake again

it's the hired help

both of the Academy Sports stores that I frequent have excellent help, if someone is actually buying a gun they have their undivided attention. If you have a question, like "where is the bathroom?" you will have to wait until they hand the gun over to the guy walking 'em out, before they will answer you.

I would rather support my local mom & pop and I always check there 1st - however, when I decide to buy I look for availability and price, because I have already made up my mind as to what I want

the help at Dick's sucks - after 1st try I thought - maybe just a bad day, after the 2nd attempt I told them to shove that henry up their @$$es

good luck finding the rifle you want

wasn't "Fio" but F initial only that it eventually became F(initial only).

You are correct, but Truman never put a period after the "S".[emoji2]

Harry S was some years before my time but I had a buddy whose middle name was S period... S. First time for me to see just an initial.
I guess Caj was so hot he missed out telling the workers what the "F" really meant.

25 years ago I bought most all new guns from big box stores. Then there was a period where I wanted to support the family operated LGS. Now I buy guns, ammo, optics and all the rest from the Net. Some of those Net purchases are big box web sites and some are family owned and operated like SGAmmo. Whatever the point is I've forgot. :D

Point and click..

You pay peanuts, you get monkeys.

I resent the insinuation!

Had my own experience 4 years ago at WM. The one and only mossberg 702 plinkster I have ever bought there. Learned my lesson about buying firearms from big box stores after that (hour and 20 min wait). I'll pay a couple bucks extra to avoid places like that for purchases of firearms.
Now I just buy ammo from WM's. If I can find someone that works there that can bend over and get ammo out of the locked case.

I won't buy from local Gander Mountain anymore for that reason Caj. I window shop occasionally but its a "stupid zoo" there. They must be very similar to Academy. I buy from 2 very small shops (single owner) or online. A FFL works at our shop. He just brings the paper work I fill it out and he delivers the gun the next day. Sticks in it my truck...Not only does he deliver he doesn't even charge me. That's real customer service.:D:D

Please forgive the ignorant newcomer, but why do parents in the US curse their kids with a middle initial but no name?

Had Caje been born in Germany, this wouldn't have been a problem. IIRC until recently there was an official list of names that could be used on birth certificates. No single initials or phonetic wet dreams were permitted.

As a guy who has been doing this waaaaay too long... We, as gun buyers, like to buy stuff cheap so we can buy more stuff. Don't forget we get what we pay for. There is a reason Academy is "cheap." Support your local gun shops. Please.

I support my LGS by paying their transfer fee. I haven't bought anything local in at least five years. The interweb gives me better selection and better prices. I used to give my LGS the chance to quote on a gun I was buying, but he could never compete, so I quit asking.

About the same.

LGS better serves the used gun market and those who seek information and advice on guns and related products. Most of the LGS around here have indoor ranges too. I don't think mom & pop shops make much money selling new handguns anyway.

My gun club always gets a crack at my new gun purchases. If he gets close, he gets the sale. He's batting .400. Surprised us by beating Buds, a couple of times.

About the last time I went to my LGS for a competitive bid, I carried a printout of the Bud's listing and gave it to him. He called his distributor, and they quoted him a HIGHER PRICE THAN BUD'S!!! I asked him why he didn't just get his guns from Bud's, but he never answered me. I figured it might be that if he bought retail, he must sell it as 'used,' or, his contract with his distributor compelled him to procure from them.

Kinda quirky . . . when I lived in Chesterfield County, VA, I was a member of a big gun/conservation club. We had an FFL. It was held by my DENTIST. I got several nice guns through my dentist.

Years ago, 1931 to be precise-a child was born in Sioux Falls SD.His mother wanted his middle name to be Francis in honor of her sister Frances. The child's father put his foot down and declared that no son of his would be cursed with a woman's name and a compromise was reached to just use an initial. That child grew to be a man and in due course had a firstborn son that he wished to name after himself. Thus was I ever cursed with an initial and no name in the middle. So blame it on a cantankerous old ******* named Horatio who I loved very much and let me ride his tractor when I was a young'un.

Big box store firearms department = the inept, lead by the incompetent making the simple, seemingly impossible!

"Customer Service" has gone the way of the DoDo bird!

I've never considered buying a gun at Academy, mainly because they're not all that competitive on price with the LGS's I frequent. Bought a crossbow a while back, and the sales staff acted like I was buying a rocket launcher. I can see where the difficulties with a firearms purchase might arise . . .
