Is there any fitting needed to properly swap from a standard trigger / hammer to the wider target versions or is it simple remove and replace? Is there any different steps necessary if the parts going in are NOS or prior used?

What are you working on? I’ve found that guns from the end of WWII up to the advent of the spring loaded yoke retaining screw work with little to no fitting as long as the parts going in are of a similar vintage. That seems to be the key: getting as close as you can to the same production years. The farther apart the frame and replacement pieces were manufactured, the more fitting is required.

Late 50’s to late 70’s K and N frames

I have upgraded the hammers and triggers ,to target types ,of my 1984 586 ND and 1970's M 28-2 with no fitting. I did use NOS hammers and close to new triggers.
Don't sweat it. Just do it.
Buy a Kuhnhausen S&W book for reference but don't stress on all the detail.
Take pictures of each step so you methodically reassemble.
Educate yourself on the removal of the trigger return spring.
I only shoot single action and I love the target set ups!

BTW,if you buy "used" parts, make sure the important surfaces are crisp and not damaged or bubba. The book explains w pictures.

Watch out for the cylinder bolt not camming down fully from its slot before the hand starts the cylinder turning. Check for function in both SA and DA mode on all chambers. If you feel a touch of hesitation it means the hand is reaching the cylinder ratchet ahead of the front of the trigger interacting with the leading edge of the cylinder bolt.
