Trip to Denver soon!

My wife and I have goal to visit every major league baseball park in the US and Canada. This has been put on hold for a couple of years due to grandchildren being born and last year her double knee replacement.

So we are headed to Denver to watch the Rockies and Cubs play at Coors Field in the next few weeks.

So from our Mile High members, any suggestions for nice places to eat and places to go? We already have a wine tasting train trip into the Royal Gorge and staying somewhere in Canyon City.

Denver is quite a nice city... plus you've got the mountains right next door... Rocky Mtn. national parks isn't too far away either (and highly recommended). Mt. Evans is also a short drive.. you can drive nearly all the way to the top.. a short walk later you get an amazing view of the Rockies. I think the summit is over 14k, but you still get a great view from as far as the cars can go. And the drive up is just amazing.

As far as eating goes, I've been to a lot of good places, but I can't recall any names!!!

For an authentic Denver experience, try the Buckhorn Exchange. I believe it is the oldest operating restaurant in the area; I've heard their liquor license is the #1, as in the first one issued. Interesting atmosphere as well, simply Google it, they have a webpage.

I don't imagine that you'll be coming to Denver for Mexican food as you're from Texas, though we have a couple of pretty good joints around: Blue Bonnet on south Broadway, Las Delicias on 19th Ave and for insanely large portions there's Jack & Grill on Federal. I'm sure there're more, especially on the west side of town but I don't make it over there often enough to know.

Silverthorne and Breckenridge have touristy main streets and are relatively close, plus there is Dillon reservoir which is full for a refreshing change - I don't know if you can rent boats there or if fishing is on the agenda but at a minimum it is a beautiful place.

Rocky Mountain National Park is nice to visit as well, though it is a bit further north. Unfortunately, I don't have any secret places to share, I'm a bit of a creature of habit.

Stayed in Denver long enough for a wedding about three weeks ago. Can't say much about where to go there because I didn't. Went down to Cripple Creek the next day. It was OK. Had a few casinos and lots of bikers who were well behaved. We took a dirt road back to civilization called the Shelf Road. It was a one land road with two way traffic on the side of a mountain. The sign said 4X4 only recommended but I got through with limited slip. I loved it. Gonna do it again someday.

Spent quite a bit of time time whilst still working and just got back from a baseball/lacrosse trip to Denver in June.

Several recommendations:

Westin-Tabor Center for lodging. Great hotel; full gym (incl. basketball court!), pool deck with great view, and The Palm Restaurant on ground level. Surprisingly "well priced." Best part is it's a 10 minute walk to Coor Field.

Many bars/restaurants literally across the street/around the corner from the ball yard. Try Lodo's for bar food...and beer. Their roof deck is fabulous. Hickenlooper's by Union Station has more upscale grub and is a brewpub. Rock Bottom on 16th Street is always good. And don't forget The Palm is you have some spare cash.

Drive to Vail if you have an afternoon or more free. Easy drive via I-70 with spectacular scenery along the way. Vail is simply exquisite and very affordable in the summer. Bring mucho $$$$ in the winter. Great shopping and dining in the village.

Do warn your wife there is no shopping district downtown.

But there is a fantastic REI store down by creek that one can walk to/from.

You will love Denver...and Coors Field. Great fan service; they distribute sunscreen should you be seated in a sunny section. You will need it.

PS: It's a flat rate cab ride to downtown. If you rent a car park at one of the surface lots instead of the hotel garage. You'll save a ton of cash.

If you're staying near the airport, Embassy Suites is the place to stay. It is simply beautiful; and they have an airport shuttle. It's also quite near the airport car rental center.

Hate cities with a passion so I can't comment on Denver, but I can tell you thing or two about Canon City. The gun shops suck but there is a military place down on Main St called Blades and Bullets. At time he has some neat stuff. Pizza Madness on Main St is very good.

Is the Wine Tasting your going to at the Abby? If it is try the Holy Cross Canon Harvest. One of our favorites.

Canon City is Colorado's original prison city. Nice museum there.

Farmers market is also good.

If you have a car and want to see some beautiful country take a ride towards Salida. To get there instead of heading back to Canon turn left and head into the Canyon and keep going until you hit Salida. Some of the scenery is breathtaking. Salida has a bunch of places to eat, 2 gun shops, lots of artsy fartsy places and Mountains, lakes, rivers, creeks in every direction. We also have one of the nicest if not nicest public shooting range in the nation.

Mr. Burg can tell you a thing or two about this area also.

If you have a few extra hours take a trip up the Canyon to Salida. While your here stop in and say Hi.

Salida also has a Winery and is open for tasting everyday. Mountain Spirit Winery is what it is called. One of their best wines is Angel Blush but the others are very good too.
