Hi Folks,
In a previous thread I installed a Troy TRX-308 handguard on my M&P 10. It was ok but I prefer a quad rail. So, last week I installed a Troy MRF. I intended to take pics of the install but it was a non-issue. Troy supplies a barrel nut with both handguards and they are identical. Changing handguards was simply a matter of un-clamping the TRX and clamping on the MRF.

Here are a few pics.

Here is a close up of how the handguard lines up with the receiver. This is the low-profile handguard.

I also installed a muzzle brake from a SCAR-17. It is an FN branded PWS FSC-30. Very effective and not overly loud.

My rifle has run 100% with FGGM, USGI 7.62 and various handloads. I've read how some folks have trouble with cheap import ammo so I thought I would try some to see if I could get the rifle to malfunction. All I had was Malaysian 80s vintage 7.62.

No problems. The Malaysian 7.62 ran perfect.

I didn't try too hard for great groups. This is the first time I've shot this rifle since breaking my right wrist a few months ago. I was pretty uncomfortable in the prone position and didn't stay on the ground any longer than I had to. I was still able to get a few 2-3" groups and figured that was as good as it was going to get for now.

I'm surprised by the reports I've read of problems with the M&P-10.This rifle has been one of the best behaved .308 semi-autos I have owned. It's run with virtually everything I've fed it. It's accurate and fun to shoot. It's a keeper..

How did you like the FSC 30 Vs the factory muzzle device? Any change in felt recoil? Did you notice any decrease in the muzzle signature?
Thanks in advance.

I like the FSC 30. I was first introduced to it on my SCAR-17. It makes a very noticeable difference in felt recoil. I consider the stock M&P 10 muzzle device not more than a different looking flash suppressor, no more effective than an A2 type.

A muzzle brake will present a bit more muzzle blast to the sides and the shooter. I don't think the blast from the FSC 30 is bad. I had a Mini Y-Comp on a AR-15 Carbine that was much worse.

very interested to know what made you switch from the trx to the mrf? i used your install thread and pictures to help me choose which rail i went with. I see you still are not using or have anything installed on the side rails.

Honestly it was just personal preference. I prefer the looks of a quad rail over a tube with screwed on rail pieces. I have no plans for anything on the side rails right now except maybe rail covers.

Is this the right one that will fit. Is it just a screw on, or do you need locktite or something along those lines?

Yes, that is the correct one. It screws on. I used an AR-10 crush washer. If you get a new PWS retail package it should come with a shim set.

Ok, great. Will it help keep the rifle from jumping up when bench rest shooting? That is really what I am looking for is to reduce the upward movement of the barrel. I don't mind the backward recoil, just that crazy upward movement.

It will help with that also. I usually shoot mine from the prone position and it helps stay on target.

Well for the price, I think it is worth a shot. I will go ahead and order it. Thanks for the info!!

Although I would prefet the TRX, I am drawn to the MRF because it comes in FDE as an option from the factory. I guess I could always rattle can the TRX, but it ain't the same.

So I received the muzzle break yesterday and no shim set. I ordered it from Cheaper than Dirt and called them about the missing shim set since it was right there in the product description, stating the shim set was included. They told me I had to contact PWS. So I called them and got a voice mail. I left a message for them to call back, no call. So I emailed them today and got a request for my address so they could shipt the shim set. Yey!!

I have a muzzle brake that tames the upward movement and some recoil. It does not make a loud concussion like some of the tank brakes do and all the 5/8-24 come with our crush washer that some big boys in the market are using.

You won't find a nicer brake. It's smooth, simple and effective without all the barbs and writing that other makers use to jaz up their product.

I can attest to that concussion blast that you hear and feel when standing behind someone with a big break. I am hoping the PWS FSC30 is not to bad. We shall see...
