True Shield Magazine Capacity

With the 7 round magazine fully loaded, it is VERY tight fitting in the pistol. My concern is this over stressed situation could result in reliability issues for first round. My answer has been to just consider this a 6 round magazine. I have wondered if the magazine springs are a little oversize to ensure that the last round is pushed up to be fed by the very fast cycling slide powered by the whopper dual recoil springs. I have looked at the "Mag Guts" and wonder if anyone has had success with this product.

It will get better with use. Sounds like you need to shoot it more. I have not experienced any reliability issues with either mag and they were both tight when new.

Ever try fitting max capacity in a glock mag? That is difficult. I have no problem with my shield fitting 7 or 8 rounds

Ditto on what Florida J Frame said. It does get better the more you shoot, but it still takes a little pressure to get it to seat. That said, I've gone through around 1700 or 1800 rounds now and never had a malfunction with it feeding or ejecting rounds.

If you are that concerned, don't +1 when loading.

Load the mag to capacity, insert, rack the slide and go.

When I first got my Shield three years ago, I could not get the 7th round into the Standard mag without using an UpLULA. Even the 6th round was rough. It didn't take very long before I didn't need the UpLULA, but it's still a very snug fit.

I got the MagGuts spring kit a Month or so ago, gave it a pretty good test at the range (over multiple trips) and just started using it in my carry mags.
The MagGuts kit does work as advertised. It not only turned my 7 round Standard mag into an 8 rounder, plus, it's easier to load all 8 rounds into the standard mag by hand. The Spring Kit DOES need to be installed properly and is relatively easy to get wrong.

My recommended practice is to fully load any semi auto magazine to it's stated capacity and let it sit in that condition for at least 48 hours before use. That allows the magazine spring to begin to take it's normal "set" and will usually reduce any problems with initial feeding of rounds while shooting. I also leave my magazines loaded all the time. Doing so does not reduce the life of the spring. It is the action of compression and releasing of that compression that will eventually cause the spring to loose it's tension. When the spring is not in motion, it is not being stressed. Time and use will accomplish the same thing. Until the spring takes it's initial set, it will be stiff. Filling the mag immediately and allowing it to rest in that condition before use will help this to happen more quickly. It will not reduce the life of your magazine (or any other) spring.

+2 The new mags are difficult to load, but I've never had a problem with 6 new mags and about 1,000 rounds total. They do get easier as they're used also.

I have over 5,000 rounds through my Shield with no issues. Mags are always loaded to the max, and it is carried every day.

My short mag functions flawlessly. My long mag has had issues with feeding first 1 sometimes 2. Only eighty or so thru it but doesn't inspire confidence. Left fully loaded for three days before firing. My SR40c didn't need to be "broken in". We'll see....
