Trying my hand at grip refinishing

Also, I used nitrile gloves while handling the grips to prevent oils from my hands causing adhesion issues. I was extra careful to ensure they were cleaned. Take it slow and they will turn out great.

My latest foray into stock refinishing resulted in this beautiful set of target grips for my model 28-2. I do believe they are turning out very nicely. What do you folks think?

you seem to have a good 'grip' on this project. Congrats, that looks 100% like factory.

I have a set that a friend refinished the same way but applied many coats of tung oil with a lot of patience. That finish is smooth and like satin but a little richer and less glossy. I prefer that but your looks certainly more factory. Try the tung oill one day.

I use formbys tunge oil. I apply many thin coats till the desired finish is what I want. If it gets worn or scratched it can easily be steelwool again and touched up.

Here a m14 stock I just did.

I have refinished many sets of grips (all brands) however I've never ordered a checkering tool kit so I can restore minor checkering loss. I'll have to add that to my bag of tricks in the future. :o

Those look really good. I think I'm gonna try that. Thanks for the write up.

Nice job on all those stocks, you did well for your first try.

Back in the 60's while in Guam or Okie, I striped down my M-14 rifle stock
and took a torch to it to "Zebra" the grain, then took 13 days of working into the grain
a lot of Lineseed oil and a hours of laying on of the hands.

It turned out to be the best looking rifle in the Battion and was an eye stopper at the inspections that we had.

The newer stuff is a LOT quicker and easier to improve any wood on todays weapons.
Enjoy those little jewels.

Next time do yourself a favor and use this

Gunstock Oil & Wax

Probably the best finish on the market. I've used their products many times on many different projects from timberframe homes to custom wooden boats. It works. Definitely the best of this type I've found and did bet nobody here has ever heard of it. Their gunstock like was sort of my idea.
