on my new M&P15 Sport. I am new to the forum, been lurking for a while but just finally registered, and really am looking forward to getting help from some of you experienced members.
So I just ordered an aluminum quad rail and a cheap foregrip that comes with it from amazon...what i really want, i think, is a bipod foregrip combo. Also, an optic, pistol grip, tactical light and maybe a butt stock pad or something... This is my first AR, and rifle for that matter, so im still learning the ins and outs and any and all pointers you guys have for me is much appreciated! Well, so i spent most of my savings just on the gun, which i got a few days ago, so im trying not to break the bank. Im really stumped on what type of optic to get though, and what type of attatchments i would need to fasten it onto the weapon. im leaning towards a 4x red dot of some sort...So please, any ideas on cost effective accesories and any pointers in general as to what would make this rifle great, would be awesome!
O yeah btw, this is just for target shooting and personal home defense, and possibly to kill coyotes. thanks!

My honest advice is to shoot it in its OEM stock configuration for a little while. You'll then get a feel for any ergonomic incompatibilities to address, then go from there.

Also the old curmudgeon in me advises you to learn to shoot with the iron sights before you mount an optic. Learn to shoot irons well, and an optic becomes a convenience not a necessity.

Congrats on your new rifle! Welcome aboard. You're well on your way to accumulating a box-o-AR parts.

Oh yeah. Congrats on your Ruger P95 you mentioned in the duplicate thread.

The P95 is the one and only handgun I regret trading away. They're very underrated handguns IMO.

yeah im in no rush really.... i bought it on friday and have put about three hundred rounds through it already. i love it man, i just want to make it even more awesome and trying to figure out what i should get to accomplish that! I have been hitting about two inch spreads from fifty yards standing with the iron sights...about two inches low though and the front sight will not budge so i cant change the elevation which is pissing me off a bit. But thanks for the advice, for sure.

yeah japes....the p95 is exceptional, especially for its price. i almost traded it and bough an XD, but i bought a hogue grip for it and i am, again, in love with it. ALMOST as much as im in love with this rifle!!!

You should wait to get a reply from forum member oneyeopn. He's the go-to guy for accessory advice.

He modified & accessorized his 15-sport so much that he built a whole 2nd rifle from his box-o-AR spare parts. It's epic.

Quality optic and quality trigger are the FIRST adds I would make, JMHO. The rest is "bling" unless you have a real need.

For the optic, decide how you will use it. Red dot for close, defensive type shooting , telescopic scope for distance OR a 1-4 X scope for a compromise between the two.

I swear by Geissele SSA-E triggers but your preference may be for single stage or a heavier pull. However, a really good quality trigger is a real pleasure and actual improvement of the rifle. Enjoy it!:)

Did you get yourself an A2 sight adjustment tool? That is the trick to moving the front sight.

H2 buffer and Tubb buffer spring will smooth out the recoil.

Do you have to have your gunsmith put the trigger on? im sure ill figure out exactly what i want as for a trigger, but im def going to shoot it alot more before i make that decision, a big thanks for that though i hadnt even really thought of it yet much because of all the "bling" out there! But now, optics are my point of interest....and im definitely leaning towards the 1-4x as thats perfect for what i want to use this firearm for, i.e. coyotes, self defense and target shooting. anyone have a good suggestion for one priced a hundred and fifty or less? i also dig the electric ones with the red or green recticles...

So yeah, first optics for me, than probabely a bipod/forgrip(suggestions?) and by then i should know my preference for a trigger job...i just want one smoother, thats all i think by now, really.
thanks guys, and any more suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
p.s. this forum rocks!

yeah i was going to get a A2 sight tool SW Gun Guy....but i figured by the time it would come in, i would have my mind up for an optic!

Votex strikefire. They make one that has both red and green dots or just red. It comes with a mount and magnifier. I've heard it dubbed "the poor man's Aimpoint" but I don't know. I have the one with the red/green dot and so far I like it a lot. It's a solid budget optic that is good for 0-100 yards.

Congrats on your new purchase! The only limitation to accessorizing your Sport will be your checkbook. Truthfully, just shoot it "as is" (as JaPes said) and spend some money on ammo and mags for now. But it sounds like you have a plan for the future.

Can use a bullet point to hold the pin down on the front sight post in a pinch.

There are probably as many ways to accessorize the AR as there are people who accessorize them. I think you are on the right track with wanting to shoot the weapon more before making too many changes. I personally believe that if you can change the oil in your car, then you can put together (or 'build') an AR.

Generally speaking, with optics you get what you pay for. Not to say that there aren't some good optics out there that are less expensive, just that the vast majority of the less expensive optics are poor quality. Great thing about this forum is that there is always someone who has 'been there, done that' and is willing to share their experience.

Good luck, stay safe, and happy hunting.

Awesome, sounds just about perfect, im going to check amazon on it right now... i just got a new pistol grip for it at dicks (blackhawk). seems really comfortable. and i got an a2 sight tool anyways. I almost got a hundred dollar 4x red dot sight there as well (True bright, or true dot i think) and the guy there said they were pretty cheaply made, so im glad i didnt. for now my roommate has an extra 4x reg rifle scope, so i got mounts and going to try that out. I have put about two hundred rounds through it as is.
thanks guys!

so i put on a 4x nikon scope with eaxtra high mounts, and i can definitely still see the front sights...i read somewhere as long as the magnification is above 3 the front sights will not be seen. well i can still see them, i mean its usable, but thats going to annoy the hell out of me. is there any possible way to remove the front sight without messing up the gas rod? or should i just get a riser for the rail?

What I recommend is:

Comfortable stock , hand guard, and pistol grip.

B.A.D from Magpul

BCM/Vltor Gunfighter charging handle Mod.3

Good red dot or magnified optic (variable power) pending rifles purpose.

...and plenty of ammo!

I have a bunch of ARs (I'm an unapologetic EBR junkie) in a wide array of configurations, and I could not agree more with the comments above. Learn the basics firsth with the stock rifle, then add things where you identify a specific need or desire based on YOUR experience. I can't tell you how many first time AR owners end up with a box of stuff they bought unadvisedly a only to discover they neither needed nor wanted.

Shoot, enjoy, and learn along the way! :)
