Trying to find a thread

I looking for a thread I saw a while back where someone had cut something out and filled in the large areas on the FDE mags with something black. It sounded like it was a stick on material of some type. Anyone know what that was?

You're probably referring to grip tape. Can get it at most sporting goods stores.

If they cut it out, it was most likely grip tape. I have used nail polish and/or white out on guns before to fill the letters and make it stand out.

If it's just for the recessed areas of the mag, you can buy a sheet of grip tape from any skateboard shop. Get around a 10"x36" sheet for real cheap. (just estimating size, it's been a whole since I brought out the board) but you can cover a lot of area with it. Might be a little too abrasive for areas you grab, but just for looks, it'd do fine.

I run skateboard deck tape on all my guns that needed it. (Glock was stippled)

The tape on my 1911 has been spray painted and it still works like very nice checkering.

Cutting it out will be hard on your scissors, so plan to "use" up a pair and don't use your wife's best ones. Cut and stick, let cure properly and they'll stay on almost for ever.

I suggest doing the front and back of the mag if you want more grip. Giving texture to the recessed parts of the mag doesn't make much of a difference IMO.


I stippled mine. It works better on certain surfaces.

stippled load assist tabs and RIT dyed followers (I was bored one night)

I find stippling works better on smaller or complex shapes. For large relatively flat pieces I'd still go with deck tape.

You can use a razorblade/utility knife. Set it on a piece of scrap wood and use even pressure. It's how the skateboarders do it. Scissors will give you a straighter cut if you don't have a steady hand. If you want to use scissors, get a pair of the medical scissors from a pharmacy, they'll cut through pennies. Or so I'm told, never deface govt property
