I am looking at a four screw .38 K frame 6" barreled pistol.
The sn is K2805xx. It has 60 4 64 stamped on the frame under, the crane It is not a model 60 what does that mean?

Welcome to the forums from the Wiregrass! You are describing a K-38 Masterpiece target revolver made around 1956, before model numbers were implemented. The numbers inside the yoke cut are assembly, inspection or fitters numbers and not related to serial or model numbers. Post some pictures and the experts may be able to tell you more.

Serial numbers having K prefixes indicate S&W K-frame revolvers with screw-adjustable rear sights made after WWII. They will be found chambered in .22 RF, .32 S&W, and .38 Special, normally having 4" or 6" barrels (other lengths are possible), and may or may not be intended for target shooting. S&W did not use model numbers until around 1958.

Absolutely correct, but .32 S&W cartridges will work. They are just shorter and weaker.

Weak?.............. Well yes, but I would not want to get hit by one. A fat .22 and a whole lot of fun to shoot! ;)

"the .32 S&W projectile is over 40% larger in diameter and over twice as heavy as the 40-grain lead round-nose bullet used in the standard velocity .22 Long Rifle of its day. The .32 S&W's velocity of approximately 700 feet per second (210 m/s) was very close to the .22 Long Rifle's performance from a sub-3-inch (76 mm) barrel, but with larger diameter and better sectional density."
