Turkey day's a coming how ya gonna fix yours? Me I can't make up my mind so looks like 20# oven bird, 15# smoked bird, and my favorite a 5# breast fried, and a 5# ham cause the oldest little 39 yo girl don't like turkey. Then for the fixin's deviled eggs, green beans, stuffing, in the bird, mashed potato's and gravy, baked sweet potato's with brown sugar and butter and cinnamon, shoe peg corn, mixed greens, sweet potato chips, cranberry both jellied and fresh home made, home made cheese pies, I use pie crusts so I don't call them cakes, pumpkin pie home made with whooped cream, fried pickles, maybe onion dip with lots of Jalapeno's in it, olives, brown & serve rolls, dough boy grands, corn bread. A little shine for refreshment and a good nap afterword's. Problem with me cookin' in my old age I don't eat too much anymore but doctor says I'm still too fat. Wonder if I forgot anything any suggestions.

Remember this week is the most traveled week of the year leave plenty of time to get where your going and be careful and patient if your going visiting. Don't forget any neighbors that may be alone this turkey day it might brighten their day if ya took them a plate.

And a safe and happy Thanksgiving to Ya'll

See post #17 My apologies again.

Sounds like you all are gonna be doin' okay. We get to skate this year...and for the entire rest of the year. :) We will be with Miss Pam's folks in the country up in the Lake Texoma area. Just about 12 miles from the Oklahoma state line. All the women up there are fantastic cooks and it's always good up there.

And if that weren't good enough we will be with my daughter in Florida for Christmas. She's pretty busy as a surgeon but she knows her way around the kitchen too. And old Dad is always happy to help out when needed. ;)

The rules for the holidays are:
. Eat too much
. Watch too much football
. Do nothing that could be construed as work except in a dire emergency.
. Eat too much
. If you travel be SAFE comin' and goin'.
.Oh, and what ever you do be sure to eat too much. There are only 2 occasions every year that you can do this with a clear conscience. Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Unsure this year. Its still not clear if my family can get together or not? One of my brothers just lost his job, the other cant afford to visit, a Nephew has to work turnaround, the rest going to Concan. Me, most likely getting a turkey breast to roast, corn souffle, stuffing, garlic and cheese scones and pie.

We are heading to my in laws in Mississippi.

They are outstanding cooks (as is my wife).

Here is the plan.

Arrive, visit
Eat
Nap
Repeat till bedtime
Wake up
Eat
Nap
Repeat till bedtime

See a pattern?:D

The same recipe I've been using for several years.
Seasoned with herbs de Provence,Fresh sage, grey salt and basted with white wine and butter every 30 minutes.
The most savory, tender and moist turkey I've ever produced but time and labor intensive.

I usually deep fry or smoke a turkey. This year I'm doing something different and using my Orion cooker which is a convection oven/smoker that'll cook a bird in 7 minutes per pound. We did a trial run a couple weeks ago and it really is that fast and does a good bird and BBQ ribs too. I've yet to try other foods but it's an amazing cooker. Google it to learn more.
We'll do a ham too from the pig we just bought that the processor smoked already. It's been good so far and expect the hams will be too.
Then we'll likely nap and pretend to be watching football.

With 45 lbs. of meat and all those sides, you must be cooking for about 100!! Sounds like you got everyone covered.

Onmea, that looks interesting and not a bad price either. I'm always interested in new ways of cooking and that looks like a winner as beer cooked chicken and pheasant is wonderful. I may have to give one of those a try. Isn't it wonderful all the ways we have for cooking these days?

First off....wishing all of my forum friends a very happy and healthy Thanksgiving and praying for the safety and safe return of all of our troops.

We just have my in-laws and 2 boys here for dinner so a small party of 6. I'm thankful that we can all be together. My M-I-L brings a turkey breast and we have the standard fixin's; stuffing, mashed spuds, cranberry sauce, sweet potatoes and a veggie or two.

That's where we detour slightly. For the past dozen or more years I have marinated an London Broil and cooked it (medium rare) on the grill. This year I have a 4 rib standing rib roast on order at the butcher. So It's prime rib as a "main course".

Dessert is the requisite apple pie and this year we're adding the word "bourbon" to the pecan pie. I'm all in for that!

OK folks I see not everyone is as open minded on calling it Turkey Day, My apologies to those offended. I will rephrase it.

Happy Thanksgiving Day.

I wonder if anyone has noticed that the USPS holiday stamps doesn't include any mention of the word "Christmas"

Stuffed and roasted like Mom used to make. It's a traditional thing and I'm a traditional kind of guy.

One of the best Thanksgivings I ever had........It was cold and miserable outside, I had spent my time helping out with the cooking but the oven was still on. The windows were dripping with condensation. Just Mary and I that year. I'm pretty much anti football so I looked through the channels until I found a Baa Baa Blacksheep marathon. Loved the whole day!!

gdnagle...Man-o-man. What time should we be there!! Sounds like your family is going to be stuffed. Everyone asleep an hour after the last fork falls.

Come on by, we've never turned anyone down.

With the big boys in the family food won't go far. Heck the 2 month old GS is in six month clothes already another bigún in the family, they are mostly tall. The world will tilt a little when they all show up.:D

I think since just the two of us now, we'll drive over to Safety Harbor (near Tampa) to a little diner we know over there. They are open 7A-3P, so brunch concept. Means no cooking for Mrs and no cleanup for me. :)

Lot to be thankful for this year. :)

A couple of years ago the wife and I broke from tradition. The kids were going elsewhere or starting their own family traditions. It was just the two of us. A turkey dinner is a commitment; dinner and then a week or three of leftovers. I've always thought turkey was kind of boring and with the stuffing and all a time consuming pain in the a...neck.

I wanted to go grouse hunting in the morning so time was at premium. I decided a simple to cook prime rib, a few sides and a couple of nice bottles of cab would make for a good Thanksgiving dinner for two. Left over prime rib makes good sandwiches and is pretty darn good warmed for a second go around.

So after chasing grouse I cooked a small rib roast. As it turned out my oldest daughters hubby had to work and her dinner plans fell through. We had her and the two teenage grandsons over to share our prime rib.

We all decided it was easier and better than a turkey dinner. So prime rib it is again this year for Thanksgiving dinner. It will be the third year we've broken from the turkey dinner tradition.

Green Chili Turkey- inject the turkey with green chili and the stuffing is ground ham, French bread, cilantro, onion, poultry seasoning and green chili.

We haven't had a thanksgiving dinner here since 2006. Just how things turned out. In the fall of 2007 my wife headed out to Las Vegas to help with her dying aunt. Yeah, she took "family leave" to do it. So that year I was kind of alone. Except my mother lives in a retirement center and decided we should come there. Along with his brood. As sometimes happens in those events, we had a milestone family moment.

We all sat down in the big dining room, but my youngest grand daughter kind of presented a minor problem. So we debated who should stay with her while the others went for food. Her mommy insisted so I got up to go. When I vanished behind a screen shielding the food from the diners, the GD let out a bellow like only a 1 year old can. It was GWANDPA! There was no way she was risking losing me in that room. But the room was full of other diners, I'd guess all of which were grandparents. Everyone got a good laugh out of it.

Better still, we finished, said our goodbyes, and everyone headed out. I got home, took a nap, and got restless. Fired up my big chainsaw (Stihl 660M) and tore into the riverbank. Then along came a committee of neighbors. All inviting me to come share the holiday with them. Seems they felt sorry for me, working like that. Many knew my wife was away. And I was cutting wood because I like to, not because anyone was pressuring me. Up until then, I could decide what I wanted to do, and it was cut wood! Well meaning people, but I was happy doing what I wanted.

So since then we've gone to Grandma's. Even if it is a retirement center. For me, the best part is no leftovers. I understand there are some who like them. Me, I prefer not having a corpse in the fridge for a week.
