The first S&W revolver that I ever bought was a 28-2 with a 6" barrel. It was the start of my interest in pre-lock revolvers that has turned into a full blown addiction.
After learning more about the Model 28 on this Forum, I started looking for a 1954 first year production 28, which is also my birth year. The ones that I came across were well used and not what I had envisioned for my birth year gun. This is where SandWtrader, my friend and SWCA sponsor, comes in. Unlike the reference to the Beatles' lyric, I wouldn't own these revolvers without a lot of help from my friends.
A year ago I gave Larry some money and asked him to look for a 1954 Pre-Model 28 at the Tulsa show. He returned with the 6", S1194XX, pictured below. A few months ago, I gave him some money again and asked him to look for a 4". He came back with S1139XX, also pictured below. Both revolvers are in excellent condition with all matching numbers except for the grips on the 4", which have a later serial number.
I'm grateful that the Model 28 only came in one finish and two barrel lengths. Otherwise, I would still be looking to fill the hole(s) in my birth year collection. I'm also grateful for the help and knowledge that is available to me through the S&W members on the Forum and in the SWCA. Enabling an addict isn't usually a good thing, but in this case it worked out perfectly.
Happy New Year,
Mike
