The most obvious difference is one, SV812256 is a 4" and SV773572 has a 5" barrel. Upon closer examination, the 4" example has the post war checkering pattern while the 5" has the prewar pattern. However, both have the early post war milled, blue stock circle insert. Oddly enough, or unfortunately, the 4" stocks are numbered SV807402. Beyond that both revolvers are identical.

The 4", part of an order of 342 units, was shipped on March 7, 1946. 171 of the 342 guns had the 4" barrel. No mention of barrel lengths of the remaining units in that order but I assume they were of the 5" variety. The 5" gun pictured was shipped March 25, 1946. No mention of the number of guns in that order.

Comments welcomed.

Edit: Just checked the invoice for the 4". The other 171 units were in fact 5".

Neat guns.

Do you have a shipping destination for SV812256? It has been listed in the Victory Model Database since it was sold at auction some years ago, but no shipping date or destination was known when it was added to the Database.

Thanks.

Regards,
Charlie

I have a similar pair. Almost all of these "SV" prefixed commercial M&P's seem to have been shipped in March of 1946.
Goony
Many of them did ship in March 1946, but quite a few did not go out the door until April and some as late as May. I own SV812156 that shipped in May 1946.

Me thinks spellcheck got you:

Tryon, not Tyron:

Tryon is correct. At least that's how Don spelled it.

One small note: SV812256 has the S above the aft side plate screw an SV 773572 does not. No big deal. Just a little S&W internal fitting process.
