The handgun situation in California is chaotic, full-size M&Ps will completely disappear over the next several months and there is a good chance SSE will disappear early in 2015. I suppose it could be years, if ever, before the courts remedy this situation.

Sooo: wife and I ordered spare M&P, nearly identical save for the absence of a mag safety. I did agonize a bit about getting a Pro, but since I didn't want a 5" barrel I figured I could always get trigger work done.

I found a relatively local FFL that does SSE very affordably and have order mag blockers which the FFL will install.

S&W has a very good customer service reputation, but there is one scenario that is a disaster if you live in CA: handgun replacement. If your manufacture chooses to replace your warranted handgun in CA and the gun isn't on the roster you're SOL.

After about 800 rounds the trigger on my M&P 40 is feeling pretty good although I have nothing with which to compare. Once I get the new 40 I'll get to work putting rounds downrange.

I don't know where you heard this, but it is completely wrong. Any gun that you own, when sent for repair, can be sent stright back to the owner. The only thing the handgun list does is limit the new handguns. It doesn't affect repairs at all.

Agreed. The doomsday scenario only occurs if S&W determines they need to replace the gun. Granted, this is extremely unlikely, but it has happened. If it's a new gun (new S/N) then it needs to go through an FFL I believe. I suppose you could have it sent to an FFL that does SSE if such is still available.

No, even under that scenario you could still get the gun.

I'll cross that bridge should it every occur, but are you saying that S&W would send a replacement handgun directly to the owner or that an FFL (without SSE) would be able to DROS a non-roster handgun since it's a replacement?

They can issue you a new handgun with the same serial number. Thus, it's the same gun. The old one has to be destroyed. I know it's been done before, but I don't have proof.

One of the agencies I instructed for use to use S&W 3rd gen. .40's. Several guns were returned, and had to be replaced. It was always with a new serial number. I am not privy to Cal.'s gun laws, but am pretty sure a private party receiving a new replacement gun with a different ser. # will have to go thru an FFL. How Cal. state law would handle that, I don't know...

Larry,
Thanks. I'm not going to inquire of S&W since the replacement scenario is so unlikely. But it does sound reasonable that some manufacturers may be able to deal with the S/N differently. Better not tell the CA DOJ;)

I don't know if the law is specific to California, but many times when people return a crappy C-93, or Golani to Century Arms for repairs, Century returns the gun directly to the customer. But many times the gun can't be repaired, & Century sends a new gun with a new ser # directly to the customer. I don't know how they get away with this, but they are a huge company with lawyers on retainer advising them what is legal. But I don't understand how they can do this, but they do. GARY
