I posted yesterday asking for information regarding two older Smith pistols I was looking at. Went and made a deal on them today and brought them home.

First one is a pre-model 10. This gun was lettered (letter since lost). It was delivered to KS in 1950. Very nice condition and I haven't seen a bunch of the snubbies around, so I think it's a good pickup. Number on the stocks match as well. I really haven't much of a use for this one, so it may get sold. Specks on the left side are lint/leather...not rust.

Second is a pre-model 40. This one isn't in super shape, but is a very early gun (I'm assuming 1952) with the low serial number. The grips/cylinder are also numbered and do match. The little safety pin is gone though. This is the one that has me wondering what to do with it. I've been wanting a "hammerless" J frame to carry for a while now. I had a 642, but didn't really like it (the lock anyway...that's a different conversation though). I prefer the older guns. This one isn't a collector's piece by any means in it's condition (85% or so?); but I'm positive I could sell it for a profit. Problem is, can I find a better J-frame for carry purposes for the money?

What would the fine folks of this forum do? Sell it off for a profit or just carry the darn thing? A little more honest wear won't detract from the value IMO.

Anyway...just wanted to share the new toys and maybe pick the collective forum brain for opinions. Thanks.

Thanks Moondawg. I just got them cleaned up...should've done that first, they're shining now! I'm a bit enamored with both actually, really fine American craftsmanship. Wish they still made stuff like this, but really wish these old ones could tell their stories.

On a side note; what are the chances a letter on the pre-40 would yield useful information? Seems like some of the earlier ones come back w/o much info.

Also...they both came with leather. A little Hume for the 40 and a pretty cool Bucheimer Concealer holster for the 10.
