Many years ago waiting at a red light, I took off quickly when it changed to green only to have my back bumper - yes back bumper - clipped by a moron who ran the red light.
This is exactly what we should all do at intersections. Mike Dillon, founder of Dillon Precision, told a story of a friend who loved to rocket forward at intersections until he got killed at one by a light runner. Mike developed the habit of looking all ways before hitting the gas.
True story. Couple weeks ago, actually.
I'm driving a special run, moving kids from one school to another for an event of some sort. Bus is a 77-seat International--about as long as you're gonna get, great steering radius, horrendously underpowered. I've got a small cadre of teachers huddled in the front rows, more than 60 kids in back.
Anyways, we approach an intersection in the middle of town with a left turn lane, which is more or less notorious. I nose into the middle, claiming the intersection, and wait for the light to turn red.
Light turns red, and I eye the next two cars about to run it. Nothing new--another day in the life.
TEACHER: omigod! That car ran the red light. And so did that one!
ME: Yes.
TEACHER: They would have crashed right into us! How did you know not to go??!!
ME: I'm good at driving?
TEACHER: Why is that car back there honking its horn? And the driver is...flipping us off?
ME: Because she was planning on running the red light. But we're turning, so she couldn't.
TEACHER: The light's been red for 10 seconds now.
ME: Yes.
TEACHER: How do you do this?
