Hello All! I just purchased a "A" prefix model 41 with the loaded round indicater. I have not researched the serial number yet to determine the year the pistol was made. It is a very nice pistol! My question to you all is what type of ammo can I use in it? I know the standard velocity target ammo is best but is it ok to use high velocity ammo in it. Or even the sub sonic ammo that is out there? Thanks for your help!

I wondered the same thing because standard is hard to
locate but that is all I am using.Others talk about changing
springs etc. but I don't want to go this route, also using
the standard velocity the pistol has about nil recoil! It is
A pleasure to shoot and the accuracy is extreme! What else
do you need? Pete

Shooting high velocity ammo in the 41 is almost an insult to the gun :)

You give up a bunch of accuracy with it and while limited use won't kill it I would try to avoid that. I know you're right that standard is hard to find, but CCI still makes a bunch of it.

By definition standard velocity and "subsonic" are the same it's just a marketing buzzword.

I have two Model 41s and they do not like bulk ammo. CCI's works best in mine.

I have a 1985 Model 41, I have never found any ammo, to include bulk that it didn't shoot flawlessly. Maybe that's just sheer luck, my Ruger Mk. 2 was finicky. I'm now shooting high velocity through it, and use a buffer. After thousands of rounds the buffer still looks like now, and is dimensionally identical to a new one.

Congrats on purchasing a great gun. One item though....it's a Cocking Indicator not a Loaded Chamber Indicator. It only tells you if the gun is cocked, not loaded.

As for ammo, CCI SV is the standard go to ammo for most 41 owners. If that's not available locally I would try to find some other standard velocity ammo or order some CCI SV online. They just shoot it so well.

Most .22lr ammunition's stated velocity, be it standard velocity all the way to hyper-velocity is measured out of a 16-18" barrel. The exceptions are ammunition designed especially for match pistol use.
Whatever you shoot in a M41 is not going to achieve 16" barrel velocities. In fact the measured vel out of a 5.5" barrel is probably going to be similar for most ammunition, that is somewhere between 900-950 fps.

The high to hyper vel stuff will however have a higher impulse and more gas velocity exiting which is not good for accuracy.

CCI-SV is a favorite of many M41 shooters because it works well in the action and is surprisingly accurate for its cost.

CCI-SV if it can be found is about $7.50/100, top of Eley's line Tenex is $39.00/100.
There is no question but that Tenex will make a smaller group in most guns, quite a bit smaller in fact. There will be flyers with CCI-SV.

I have attempted to use Tenex in my 41s, fortunately even the round nose bullet type does not feed well at all.

My 1958 M41 just loves the CCI 40gr ammo as well as my 1963 M46. I would never use any hi-power ammo in them but would shoot Blazer if I really had to. Its made by CCI also and seems to work fairly well in a pinch. Never had a problem yet with it on occasion. I am fortunate enough to get all the CCI that I can shoot it seems.

Wolff makes heavier recoil springs for use with HV ammo.

I've tried SV and HV both with and without a buffer installed in my early sixties model. Function was not affected. My gun showed a marked preference for Blazer with SV a close second. My 2206 also prefers Blazer, but despises SV. The 41 despises MiniMag and barely tolerates Federal AutoMatch. The .22lr guns can be finicky in their ammo preferences.

Blazer is cheaper to buy as well then the CCI but where I live in Canada we have lots of the CCI it seems. I shoot around 3 bricks a month and have no trouble getting it at all. We even have ammo cans that hold 1400 rounds on sale at this time at one shop a block from my house.

I have two mod 41's, and the only ammo I use is CCI S/V.
I shoot in a league during the winter, and have had minimal FTF or FTE problems. LGS advised if S/V not avilable to use CCI Green Tag also 40gr

I found mostly CCI Mini Mag ammo and HV ammo here on the island. Had some luck finding American Eagle standard velocity ammo. I installed a buffer in my M41 and a Wolfe spring. I've owned my M41 since new for five years now. There had been no ill effects on using the CCI Mini Mag or HV ammo. In fact my S&W M41 and Ruger Mark III Hunter pistol likes these ammo more so than the American Eagle or bulk ammo. Using a sand bag, I can shoot dime size holes all day at 25 yards.

No as the radious was cut differently on the earlier ones and the higher powered ammo has been known to cause cracks in the slide of some of the early 46's. I have a later model 46 but still won't use the high powered stuff as it does not feel right in the gun. Besides I love my 46 way too much to ever possibly damage it doing something I know I should not do.

I can't even count how many bricks of Federal Gold Medal match HV and standard .22 ammo I've shot through my old model 41 ( pictured with field weight 5" barrel )....never a problem ! Keep the lube light on the slide and change the recoil spring every few thousand rounds or so....is all I do ! :)
