And another useless post!
Well the garbage disposal went bad. That happens. However I'd been delaying repair of the other side of the double sink due to all of the **** underneath the sink. So I figure I'll fix the leak so that sink can be put back in full service so I get to the disposal side and still have a sink in service.
The zinc nut under the strainer had rotted away allowing a leak when draining. Getting the old washer off was no issue as it just crumbled away. It was only 21 years old??? So I took apart what was needed to get a new nut on. As that's the drain the RO waste dumps into it was a bit more complicated, but not bad.
Putting it all back together, although I tried not to, I managed to spin the strainer in the sink tub. So of course it leaked. OK, take the stuff back off and unscrew the strainer nut so I can reputty the strainer flange.
Nope, the strainer nut isn't coming off without a fight. I ended up having to cut it with a dremel cut off wheel and then pry it off in pieces. Yeah it was the same dremel I do bubba smithing with. My arthritis made all of this a pure joy. Anyhow, I figured while I was at it I'd install and nicer strainer. At least no complications on that.
Oh, the disposal. It was a 7 year old Moen with a 10 year warranty. My bride even came up with the receipt. A call to moen has a replacement on the way, unfortunately by slow boat. So the project remains unfinished.
I'm going to replace the RO with a more simple filter system while I'm at it. I might replace the instahot too, but that one might be more challenging. Disposal replacements are a PITA and more so due to arthritis but usually don't provide unexpected surprises.
A friend of mine was complaining last week about having problems replacing his disposal due to a very weakened arm due to a shoulder replacement. I offered to help him. He laughed and said "You only have one good arm." I told him that between the both of us we have two good arms. He declined my assistance saying we both couldn't fit under the sink.
I've thought about asking him to come over and help fix mine. There are some disadvantages to getting old. I think he was going to work up some kind of jack out of wood to hold it up so he could attach it.
