Ugh....Just got back from Emergency Room minus 3/4" of index finger....

Too bad they don’t make more products like the SawStop table saws. That thing is pure genius. Not sure how they would incorporate it into milling machines but I’m sure some whizbang scientist and engineer could find a way. Sorry for all the pain you have been through and I hope you are well on the road to recovery. I don’t have one of your hammers but it is on my wish list of things to procure.

My worst ever was on the surface grinder. I had a 6" x 6" block of carbon making a trode for the guy's in EDM. Touched my thumb ever so slightly to the wheel, and didn't realize it. I'm machining away. Guy's around me are turning white as a ghost, and looking really sick to thier stomach, mumbling and pointing at my hand. It was only then i saw the fountain of blood spewing from my thumb. Right down through the tendon. To this day i have a scar across the outside of my thumb, and a big black mark imbedded under the skin. I guess some carbon was left in there as a reminder to be careful. Sic doctor humour of some kind. Hope you recover as well as I . 26

Shoo,

Very sorry to hear about your accident, and I hope you're back in the saddle again soon. Try to look at the bright side - now when you make a "gun hand" gesture with your left hand, everyone will know you've got a snub-nose. (Maybe you could have the S&W logo tattooed to the back of your hand for added realism.)

Best wishes for a speedy recovery,

Dave

Ooooo I'm still puckered up like a Plain's Indian moccasin... Prayers for a quick and complete recovery!

Wow Shoo. We computer jockeys don't have any such occupational hazards. Instead, we use our avocations to damage our digits.

About 15 years ago I was working in an unlighted garage tightening the water pump pulley bolts on my 1986 Fiero SE 2.8L. Imagine the following circuit: the negative battery post... the engine block ground strap... a water pump pulley bolt... the ratchet... a small pewter ring on my right ring finger... and the positive battery side post. Yep, I made contact with a fully charged car battery with that ring, which completed the circuit.

There was a loud pop, followed by a shower of sparks, and then the sound of me screeching loudly to the horror and dismay of a mate working with me. After a few seconds the ring cooled off enough to actually pull it off. The end result? I was missing a ring of flesh all the way around the finger about 2 mm wide and about 0.5mm deep. On the ring were two holes surrounded by scorch marks: one where the charge entered the ring, and one where the charged exited the ring into the ratchet handle. The next six weeks were painful of a kind I never care to repeat. As I had no health insurance, I sought no care for the wound and thankfully it didn't get infected or I might have lost much more than some flesh. One day I caught the wound on a CD tray while working on a PC. I cringed when you described stoving your stump on the wall; I've been there.

This was nothing compared to what has happened to you, but please know that even lesser experiences allow some of us to feel your pain with you.

Thanks guys, all your comments are much appreciated. I'll keep you posted how Stumpy is doing..... Shoo ;)

With your "precise" and trained eye, I feel you should assist the Doctor on this one! That is unless you choose the Blue pill!! ;)

You'll do just fine! :)

I lost 3/4 of my right hand trigger finger when I was 12. Hasn't held me back you learn to adapt I shoot in multiple sports from muzzleloaders to 22 matches. Only thing I really regret is the dr. not takeing the rest of it off . the stub gets in the way all the time and turns blue out in the cold weather. Otherwise I can do anything I want to. except count to ten. You will do fine.

Shoo, ask your Doc for a plastic finger guard that you can tape on and protect your stump from hitting on everything. I did the same as you (right index finger caught in heavy machinery) and I could not stand to even blow on it because it hurt so bad (you probably damaged/exposed/mangled nerves...that is what I did). I wore that plastic guard for months afterward before I could stand little bumps, etc. Made your hair stand on end didn't it? Ohh, the memories. Chin up, it does get pain free eventually.
