Anybody else not able to run or punch in a dream? If so why is this, this has bothered me for countless years now and i have never bothered to ask why this is.

Here is a guess.

It could be because you are feeling trapped or helpless by a particular situation or memory. A way to stop these dreams is to use a technique a South American tribe uses to help kids with terror dreams. When you awaken tell yourself to go back to sleep and change the dream so you come out victorious. A nice S&W would appear to be in good taste. If you can't get back to sleep you can visualize the same victory while lying there awake. This has worked for my kids and for myself as well as combat veterans I worked with.

I think it's like that for everyone. I have had a recurring dream since childhood where I cannot run or even move.

Ive had dreams were i could fly than that dream comes back later and i need to get a way from the bad guys and i cant fly!! With me i think its related to when i dont have control of something in my life. 7shooters suggestion has worked for me before. you would actually be surprised how much you can control in a dream.

I always thought that it was because since you are lying in bed your legs are pretty much restricted from simulating any type of running movement........your dreaming brain wants to run in its fantasy.....but in reality you are lying down and your legs are restricted from that type of movement.

.....ditto for "punches".

Sleeping normally causes a degree of paralysis. In a lighter stage of it we can be sort of semiconcious and be aware of some things.

Never had the running problem. Could always run in my dreams but not being able to punch is common for me ever since childhood.

Here is some useless sleep related knowledge. Has it ever happened to anyone just as you are falling asleep all of a sudden your leg violently twitches? Thats your bodys fight or flight response. As you fall asleep your "lizard brain" thinks you are dying and tries to jolt the your body out of it

Yeah, your body tries to protect you from actually taking action during a dream. I guess some people have a condition that shuts this protection off. Kind of scarey.

I havent had a dream where I couldnt run or punch, cant run anyway. I used to have a dream several times that was odd. My job was a guard at a huge defense plant. I worked graveyard. It involved doing rounds at times on weekends and holidays in a totaly empty factory with huge buildings where a city of people worked. There were high narrow walk ways with railings that I had to check out in the dark with dimmly lit factory floor maybe 150 feet down. I could even take you to the exact spot awake.
This rough big old guy that I knew as a janitor in the factory came out of the dark snarling and swinging a iron bar at me. The fact that I had my revolver out and on him didnt concern him anymore than had it been a rubber balloon. My trigger was froze like it was welded. Then I woke up.
The interesting thing was I later learned the man was heavy in the olcutts and was a devil worshiper.

This is funny, as I have the same issue.
The last time, I was dreaming of goal tending in a soccer game (??? I haven't played soccer since HS). I kept attempting to run and dive for the ball but could not get there. I remember getting very discouraged in my dream. I finally gave it my all, waking up after punching the headboard!

Fear! I have CCW and sometimes take it out of my pocket.

A guy came up to the car window and said: "do you have a gun?" I said "NO". He then stuck a knife in my face, I grabbed his arm and pulled him in the car, trying to Hammer Fist the side of his head, couldn't connect...and no gun! Glad I woke up. Sat on the edge of the bed and thought: "whoa, just a dream..."

One I had for years had me standing at the top of a long flight of stairs, losing my balance, falling and then discovering I could fly.

There was a old train watering tower in the town I used to live in. A girl on drugs climbed up it and jumped she had told people she was going to fly. The city tore the water tank down.

I have had those dreams, also the falling dream where you wake up before you hit the ground. Did you ever have the naked dream; you are in front of a bunch of people buck naked and it ain't a nudist colony?

I have never had the naked dream befor, though i always had the falling dream when i were in school. I would all the sudden pop up and kick the desk..then notice the whole class staring at me

I did not think one was able to control their dream, i would really like to know how. These are some good responses though

We all have a built in fight or flee response, sounds like you are being stripped of this in the dream.Leaving only your ability to reason and communicate.
My best guess would be, there is someone in your life that you cannot fight or run away from, but because this is a recurring dream you also have problems communicating with or having them understand who and what you are.
Could be someone who passed away when you were younger but most likely someone close to you.

I actually took off running across the house in my dream when I was a kid. When I was about 10 my uncle took me to see "Jaws" when it just came out. That night I was having the usual nightmares and while asleep I actually ran out of my bedroom across the living room and crashed head first into our stereo turn table cabinet and messed up one of the big speakers..lol..the next night in my dream all the sharks were on the beach and people were in the water to keep safe.
I have slept on one of my arms occasionally laying under me which cut off the circulation and leaving my arm basically dead and dangling when I woke up until the blood comes back and you squeal in agony..When this happens I seem to dream my arm was cut off..

My dreams are too realistic and mundane now. About the time I stopped having "fantasy" dreams I learned to make my mind work enough to control my self in the dream or the dream itself... except the spiders... can never stop the spiders...

I wish I was unable to punch or run. My wife wakes me up mad because my legs are thrashing or I've been punching the wall. Jeeez, you'd think she WANTS the giant spider to catch me.

I'm so glad to read this thread! For years I had recurring dreams of being in some trouble or other, and trying to throw a punch or run felt just like I was doing it in slow motion; like under water.

Also, even for years after graduating high school, I dreamed over and over that i got on the school bus either naked or in my underwear.

I assumed I was the only one, and mentally disturbed in some way. Probably still the case, but I am glad to see I'm not alone.

As I quickly approach 40, I find I rarely have dreams anymore.

That is right on the dot, i get so frustrated when i wake up knowing i should be whooping butt in my dreams. But i have yet to have the naked dream. If i am correct though, you dream every night but you only remember the dream if you have completed it. I can remember dreams i had 2 months ago

Oh man thats great. Its never a good thing when you have to ask her the next morning where those bruises came from.

I don't know about that. I can vividly remember a few dreams I never got to "complete".:)

One night my first wife, who only slept in her bottoms, sat straight up in bed yelling. Scared the do do out me. "What's the matter?" "There are snakes in the bed, there are snakes in the bed!", she yelled. Next thing I know I hear her running down the hall of the trailer and the front door opening then slamming shut. A minute later she calmly walks back into the bedroom. "How far did you get?" "Half way across the front yard."
