Just a Few Months Ago, I purchased my Second Model 58 (S259,000 SFPD). I had foolishly decided to part with a N Serial Numbered Model 58 that had been Modified (Jeweled Hammer/Trigger etc), and after reading up on them, decided I liked everything about them. (I have since bought back the Modified N Serial Model 58, you can see her in the Group Picture of my 3 Model 58's)

Got the Model 58 SFPD for a reasonable price off a Fellow Firearm Enthusiast whom I have done business with in the past, both bought and sold. Couldn't be happier with it, and I shortly posted pictures here on the Forum, and in the Model 58 Club as well.

3 weeks ago, I happen to stop by a LGS and ask if they had any Smiths coming out. One of which was a model 58, I put my name down, and stopped by a week later to inspect before starting paperwork. The price was right for any Model 58 decent-Good condition in my neck of the woods. Then I saw it had the original box, then I Took the top of the box off, and saw the manual and Checkered Grips with the Diamond around the Screw, I thought in my head, All-right!! S Serial Number! I quickly said I'll take it, filled out the paperwork and went home.

Then I pulled out the Smith Catalog 4th Ed, and started looking at serial numbers, and manufacturing dates. That's when I started to feel my heartbeat turn up a Notch. Couldn't quite remember the Serial, so I pulled out the Paperwork. When I read
S 256,511 I knew I had something special.

According to what I've researched so far, 1st production Run started at S 256,500. Soo mine should be roughly the 11th one made, Possibly the first Production day even? Who knows!

When I finally brought her home, and wiped the dust off, and cleaned her up I discovered, the Grips Match Too! (Or at least one Panel is stamped)

She isn't completely mint, I'd Conservatively rate her at 98%, with a hair-width scratch near one of the grips, and a touch of blueing thinning/loss near the Address Line.

Unclear if she is unfired outside of Factory, I would guess 1 Cylinder or two was shot through it, then put away.

Anyways, love to hear your thoughts, I'll be sending away to Roy Jinks for a Letter, and I'll post Pics in the Model 58 Club as well.

P.S. I paid $950 for this 58. I'm always curious, and appreciate when people share the full details on their good fortunes as well.

Enjoy!

The 58 41Rem Mag

Wow that is Nice and in Exceptional shape! I keep looking
for a Model 57/657 and keep forgetting about the Model 58.

I'll find just the right 41Rem Mag one some day.

Made the mistake on passing on a LH S&W 657 41Mag 8"Bbl
at a reasonable price at Cheyenne WY Gun Show parking lot.
It had everything; looked hardly shot, paperwork, paper,
Scope Base, Receipt, LH patch, excellent condition Blue Plastic
case (no whitish bruises on plastic).
Still kicking myself (didn't want the 8"+Bbl).

Thank you for sharing a Great Story and Great Pictures

Below, what I'm usually looking for, NIB.

Very nice Bob! Yours is a very early production as well! Have you sent in for a letter yet?

Your serial number peaked my interest and I checked mine it's S2567xx. Pretty early too. Enjoy it they are really cool pieces.

Thanks for the Info, Jack. I had hoped this was the case, couldn't remember whether it was one panel or both.

S&W only stamped the serial number on the right panel. So, one only is correct.

Go buy a LOTTO ticket you may be on a roll.

What a lucky find! And in great shape too.

My LUCKY story is falling into a pre 19 Combat Magnum at the Reno show several years back. I knew it was early, then when I checked the book in the room, it was the 25th CM built. A letter revealed it had been given to one of the Factory Reps. Possibly a Dealer sample to show buyers?

You did VERY well...a beautiful 58!

Thanks Frank! I'm pretty pleased with it as well! Congrats on your pre-19! I'm sure she is quite the looker!!
