So ... threatening (but not increasing) tariffs surprised our neighbors this time. It's only a surprise once.
Wow…… you either have to have the last word or you simply don’t understand. Yes the importer pays the tariff. But many times the exporter reduces the price of his commodities by the same amount. Therefore the cost to get it to market is the same and price does not change at retail level…… like buying a car. Dealer won’t go lower on price. But he gives you a little more on your trade. Then you save on sales tax and it’s exactly the discount you wanted. AGAIN its commerce 101. Just because you don’t understand it, doesn’t make it magical thinking. As to not being argumentative. That’s all you do. In every single thread you’ve ever commented on. Don’t think other members don’t notice this.
This was a rounding success! We got the following:
From Canada - Confirmation that they will do what they already committed to last December, improve border security on their end. Get the Canadians to rally around their flag and a lame duck outgoing Trudeau, likely ensuring that the Trudeau replacement will be a Trudeau like replacement.
From Mexico - Some extra troops on their border that will likely be withdrawn when the dust settles, and a promise that we will start clamping down on gun trafficking. Which might as well be an admission that their lawsuit against our gun manufacturers is justified, we are now committed to helping Mexico with its criminals with guns problem.
From China - Not nearly enough, tariff them to oblivion, they deserve it, and the world is full of suppliers willing and able to take their place.
HOORAY WE WON!!!!
Next, fire useless and overpaid “contractors”.
So, we can’t use tariffs because that increases inflation. Then we can’t bring jobs back here because we would have to pay higher wages and thereby increase inflation.
So the solution is to keep buying cheap goods from abroad. Is that right?
Nobody said that rebuilding our country will be quick, easy, or painless. This was a rounding success! We got the following:

You can't bring jobs back when there is nobody to do them. Where is this vast, underemployed but skilled workforce to kickstart a manufacturing revival?
OK, assuming you can get the workers, the end result is still higher prices and probably less choice. That's a hard sell to much of the American public living paycheck to paycheck in the 21st century. Sure, they will tell pollsters that they will tighten their belts for the benefit of the country. But, when faced with the realities of getting yelled at by the family because they don't have the latest phones, clothes, or yet another car, they are going to be wishing for the cheap stuff, not caring about the source. This is where the Anglo-Saxon Western societies have gone. It didn't happen overnight, and it cannot be fixed in that timescale, either.

Like you, I'm not sure the masses have the stomach for it. Listening to the naysayers in this thread, I'm afraid they don't, but I hope they do.
This is a start, let's hope we can rally together to see it through.
AMEN to that! The masses almost committed suicide when TikTok went down for like 30 minutes. I'm not optimistic. But something had to change.

I just can't believe we've been lied to...
Our neighbors aren't the only ones who are surprised.
We've been told for several months that the word "tariff" is the most beautiful word in the dictionary...that tariffs would usher in a new golden age...that tariffs would bring in so much money we might even be able to get rid of the income tax. Now we're being told that tariffs were only a threat, designed to scare Canada and Mexico into doing what we want them to do.
I just can't believe we've been lied to...
And the same handful of members here will get their panties in a bunch. Because again, he’s not their guy.
$611 Million for projects in Somalia??? That would cover an extra ATC in every tower, dontcha think?
I assume your referring to someone else...if not...so far I have been cheering 99.9% of what he has done, this being the .1% that did not impress me. The Mexico agreement alone should have everyone in this forum gritting their teeth, because now the ATF will be on a hiring spree to get enough agents to investigate every gun dealer in the country identifying guns purchased and sent south of the border. Not being in 101% lockstep agreement doesn't make someone the spawn of Satan. And then there's the blue state public employee union members that spent their entire career at the hogs trough turning their blue states into economic wasteland's before tucking tail and fleeing south talking about contractors...how pathetic.
