Anyone ever hear of this organization ? My brother found an old Medal buried while doing yard work at my mothers house. she has lived there since 1952 so its been there awhile. Really neat Sterling Silver 1st place medal with shooters score and name engraved on it.

The USRA was founded over a century ago. If you search the forum archives you will find it mentioned in several threads.

Beyond that, an internet search with any major search engine should produce more informative hits than you can shake a stick at. I even saw a link to a page featuring a USRA medal on the first screenful of hits that appears in a Google search.

In the national guard in the early 80s we shot several postal matches in the USRA. That is a beautiful medal.

The USRA competitions seemed to recognize state or perhaps regional distinctions. I have seen different state names on other medals that resemble this one. Since the medal under discussion here has a worn top field that makes the state name hard to read, I'll volunteer that it looks like ILLINOIS to me.

yes, it's from Illinois. I searched the name C.W. SCHLEDORN and found the he worked for Bell Telephone Co. and there were several articles about his shooting prowess. I think on the army or national guard teams, Very interesting and no idea how it ended up in moms back yard..

My precision pistol team used to belong to USRA and shot postal matches for several years. Unfortunately, the organization seemed to lack a solid management in the last few years we belonged and we dropped out. I believe it has now dissolved. I did however get a few medals of my own.

Short version: USRA was founded in 1900, held national as well as state & local handgun matches in different categories for revolvers & pistols. The ran everything for the U. S. Olympic pistol & revolver teams thru 1936; they had merged with the NRA several yrs. earlier, but were a separate branch as the Olympic Committee were much happier with the USRA than the NRA. Most years the handguns used by the USRA were supplied by S&W as well as Colt. I own R H Sayres S&W single shot 1st model with a Pope barrel, he was Captain of the first 4 teams.

After Hatcher's and Renshaw's performances at Bisley in 1931, there was also a certain amount of interest in H&R's USRA pistol, as well.

I will suggest this score was earned in the outdoor slow fire match-----50 rounds in 60 minutes at 50 yards--------and single shots RULED!!

I shot USRA postal matches for many years. I actually won several medals. They had a lot of different kinds of matches, both rim fire and center fire. Most of the gallery shooters in my league shot some type of USRA match at one time or another. It was a great way to get in some match experience without actually going to a match. The record keeping got to be a bit of a job and no one at my club wanted to do it so we stopped. Shortly after, they dissolved. That was about 10 years ago. I think they operated out of Springfield, Ma.
