unregistered guns ????? HANDGUN

I don't know how ya'll put up with that BS there.

They great love of my life is a Bronx girl, and her dream is to retire to the area around Tannersville, New York, where she and her family used to take summer vacations when she was a kid. It's absolutely beautiful in that region, and I love it, but there is no way I can move there because of the gun laws. :(

What's so good about Maryland?

IT AIN'T EASY... If i weren't taking care of my 90yr. old mother i'd be gone from here... Can't strap her to the top of the car like the Clampets
I told my mother in Chicago that if she needed to, she could come live with me, but that I would NEVER live in Illinois, much less Chicago, again. She knows I mean it too. Five minutes in Illinois makes me want to put a gun in my mouth. I'm not sure how that would help her.

In 2003, one of my first stops was to the local PD to declare/register my guns. They looked at me like I had 2 heads.
I visited my mother in Chicago one Christmas and one of my relatives asked me if my guns were "registered". I told her, "No and I wouldn't live anywhere where I needed to."

Every once in a while, some foetal alcohol syndrome victim "journalist" here will note that "so and so was found with an unregistered gun". If I'm bored, I'll call up the station and ask them where I go to register a gun. This usually results in an awkward silence. Sometimes they point me at the local cops whom they claim gave them the information. If I'm REALLY bored, I'll call the cops and ask them how I "register" a gun in a state with no registration...

I'm not thrilled with the NJ gun laws either but if you have the ability to follow a few simple instructions and fill out a couple forms getting a handgun purchase permit is really no big deal. It certainly cuts down on stupid impulse buying. We can buy all the long guns we like all day long, it's not as bad as people believe.

Not much these days, to be blunt about it. From a gun owner's perspective, Maryland is terrible. I think you misunderstood my previous post: I want to move from here, but I can't move to New York State.

I was born and raised in this state, have never lived anywhere else, and spent 30 years in the Baltimore City Fire Department. But Maryland has changed, especially in the last three decades, and folks like me are clearly no longer welcome here. :(

I've gotten the hint, and it's time to move on...I just have to decide where to go. My new home state has to be cold, with a real winter, have mountains, and be gun-friendly. I'm thinking Vermont, but one of the western states would be nice too. I'll miss the crabcakes here, but FedEx can take care of that problem. :)

With all due respect, it sounds like you've bought into the anti-gunners' argument that the restrictions they place on us, the barriers they erect, are really no big deal.

The problem is that criminals don't care what gun laws are enacted, they won't obey them. So the only thing these various registration/licensing schemes do is inconvenience the law-abiding, at no benefit to public safety.

Here in the Peoples' Republic of Maryland, I just spent $104.50 for a Handgun Qualification License, which is now needed here in order to buy or rent a handgun. I had to get fingerprinted, and it took a month for the State Police to issue the license. Because I am a longtime gun owner, I did not need to take the mandatory 4-hour training course required of first-time buyers. But when I buy my next handgun, I will have to undergo yet another background check (at a cost of $10) and wait seven days to take possession of the gun. (This is in addition to the federal instant check.)

I could possibly accept these 2A infringements if there was some tangible benefit from them. But making a 61 year old retired firefighter, who lives in a small, safe town, jump through these hoops isn't going to save the life of one young man on the mean streets of Baltimore. And THAT is why these laws are such a big deal... :(

CERTIFICATE OF NON-DESTRUCTION
From time to time, handguns are found in the county or brought into the county under circumstances that are not criminal in nature, such as finding a handgun among possessions of a deceased licensee or purchased/brought from another state. Penal Law Section 400.05 requires destruction of weapons that are not properly registered. Persons possessing such unlicensed handguns can be arrested, therefore, the weapon(s) should be turned into the Sheriff's Department for safe keeping and proper registration of the handgun can be obtained. A procedure has been established to permit individuals a means of applying for a Certificate of Non-Destruction from the County Court. Individuals can apply for this by either contacting the Pistol Permit Clerk or the sheriff's Department. Once a weapons check has been completed by the Sheriff's Department, the Sheriff will submit his recommendation at which point, the Judge may sign the Certificate of Non-Destruction. The individual will be contacted to complete the process by having the weapon registered on their permit or that of a licensed individual.

OR-- you can just move to Virginia-- :)
