Unusual Model 66?

I saw an ad on the local Armslist for a 2.5" Model 66. I'm not interested in it, but it caught my eye. The picture clearly shows the gun has a square butt frame. Did S&W ever make a square butt 2.5" 66? I've never seen one. Could have just been the light, but the finish on the barrel and frame didn't seem to quite match. Barrel swap?

According to the 4th ed. of the catalog, the 2 1/2" was made with a round butt. So that revolver might have been a special order, but I doubt it, or a re-barrel.

Saw several 66s and 19s rebarreled from 4" to 2.5" as the owner had large hands and the square butt was a better fit. Concealment required more effort.

Clint Eastwood carried a SB snub 66 in the late 70's flick "The Gauntlet." I know nothing as to its provenance.

This question pops up semi-frequently. I believe a member or two have confirmed factory square-butt 66 snubbies, but very few and not a standard S&W offering.

Too, as mentioned, a rebarrel is possible, as is the example you saw was sporting round-to-square stocks.

Nope. The picture shows the gun wearing standard square butt magnas. There's no doubt that its a square butt.

The best way to spot a rebarrel either way is by closely examining where the frame and barrel rib meet.

Non snub 19,66 and 15 frames step down to the barrel rib.

The frames in 2.5" snub models 19, 66 and 2" Model 15 all mate to the front site ramp which is slightly taller so their frames do not step down.
Btw this is also why snub rear site leafs are longer continuing all the way to the ramp base.

I bought this years ago. 66 no dash 2.5 barrel, square butt. See round but thought mine was original barrel??? What do you think?

Looks like a round butt to me.

The revolver that you show is quite obviously an original, 2 1/2", round butt Model 66

What I do see is that the side plate screws were put in the wrong holes by whomever took the side plate off last
