A B.C. family had a thrilling experience off the coast of Vancouver Island when a humpback whale spent almost an hour rubbing up against their boat, spinning around, and flapping its fins.

"...Aleks Mount was whale watching with his family on Tuesday, northeast of Campbell River, when the whale got friendly.

When they first spotted the humpback about 100 metres away, Mount said he immediately shut off his engine, intending to keep his distance.

But the whale dove underwater only to resurface less than a minute later below their boat.

Mount said he and his family were at first terrified of the creature, which he described as the size of a school bus.

"All it has to do is flip its tail and the boat will be in the air."

Luckily, Mount said, the whale only hit the boat once with its fin, leaving a slight bend in the boat's railing and a few minor scratches. ..

...Andrew Trites, director of the marine mammal research unit at the University of British Columbia, said despite hearing a few recent reports of humpbacks engaging with boats, this is the closest one he has seen."

Story here.

Mount's video footage shows the whale spinning and flipping around just inches from the boat, occasionally spraying them from its blow hole.

Once, while deep sea fishing, a baby(20 ft.)came right up to the boat and checked us out. Way cool!

I have a good friend that is a semi-retired marine biologist. She preaches that the Great Whales are the most magnificent animals in all Creation. She has studied them, promoted them, protected them, defended them and supported them with fervor.

She said she would never do anything to cause them direct or indirect harm or suffering if she could possibly avoid it. She truly loves them.

She also told me that if a whale was all that stood between her family and starvation she was grabbing a harpoon.

Once, on my grandfathers boat, we were motoring along through the Puget Sound when 3 orcas decided to swim along side and pace the boat for about 45 seconds or so. It was really cool and they were right next to the boat. But we didn't get no hour long show. Wasn't the most amazing thing we saw from that boat.

Ummm... bad luck for her family, by the sound of it

Dnghy lifted by humpback during hours-long encounter

Another up close & personal encounter with a humpback on the coast of BC.

Story and video here.
"...At one point, the whale actually lifted their boat and swam with it....

"Once it also got used to us, it started slapping the boat around and being more playful, and that's kind of when it got more scary," ...

"Here we are so far away from anything in a really deep fjord..."
This took place on the mainland side of BC, opposite Vancouver Island where the first story happened. The scenery up there is jaw-droppingly beautiful.

November 1970.

My how time and blubber flies....
As an English friend is won't to say, "From the sublime to the 'gor blimey' " Thanks for sharing (NOT).

"The dunes were rapidly evacuated..." AFTER the blast. Brilliant.

I wonder how many damage claims were made against the demo company.

Can you imagine the owner of that car explaining to his agent how this happened?
