The weather is slowly turning to "reasonable" and Appleseed shoots are starting up again in the northeast.

There are shoots all over the place the weekend of April 18-19* - look right here for the year's schedule, and find a spot near you!

I won't tell you this is the best training you can ever get. Appleseed teaches traditional marksmanship using a sling and iron sights. It's not a run'n'gun, it's not tactical training. It is good training, and probably the cheapest training you'll ever find. It's also a healthy dose of American history.

I think it's worthwhile for ALL shooters, in ALL disciplines - there are common threads to all kinds of shooting, and many of them are covered during an Appleseed.

I'll be instructing at the April shoot in Throop, NY; the May shoot in VanEtten, NY; and the June shoot in New Breman, NY. I'd love to see some of you there. Forum member G-mac came to the Throop shoot last year, and I think he had a pretty good time.

(RobO - you're close! You have notice!)

Fees are simple:
$70 for both days in advance, $80 "at the door".
$45 for one day in advance, $50 "at the door".

Women, shooters under 21, and active-duty .mil shoot FREE.

(Range fees may apply at some ranges.)

There is NO minimum age - young shooters are welcome. If your child is old enough to responsibly handle a rifle and follow range commands, they are welcome.

.22s are highly recommended; the 10/22 is a perennial favorite.

We'd love to see you there!

I'll start with the stock answer:
Appleseed is a reminder of the tradition of marksmanship in American history, and strives to pass that legacy on to today's shooters.

My answer:
Appleseed is marksmanship training, teaching you to use a rack-grade service rifle with iron sights and a sling, and make effective hits out to 500m. If you've ever shot NRA high power, it's the same concept. We teach the three positions (standing, sitting, prone) and how to use a sling properly (and how to use several different slings). There's a healthy dose of US history, as mentioned, and the roots of the US Revolution. We'll teach you to get your sights really zeroed, and what a true "battle sight zero" is.

I will stress this - there are NO POLITICS at an Appleseed. We don't care who you voted for. An instructor may encourage you to be active, know your elected representatives, and above all, USE your privilege to vote ... but we'll never tell you who to vote for.

We want people to get off the couch and out - get active. Learn some history, learn to SHOOT your rifle, instead of just pulling a trigger...

I was kinda skeptical the first time I went. Their site is a bit heavy on the kool-aid for some people (me included) ... but the information is good, and if you can't leave with at least a few good ideas for your own shooting, then you didn't pay attention.

Most of the shooting is done at 25m with targets scaled appropriately - hence the reason most of us shoot .22 rifles. (Not to mention cost - plan on 400-600 rounds fired over the course of two days!)

ANY rifle is welcome, though. We see lots of different types - 10/22s, bolt guns (from .17HMR all the way to .270), Garands, M1As, AKs, ARs, Mosin-Nagants, etc, etc.

We shoot through the weather unless safety is a real issue. An Appleseed WILL test your equipment. Dust, rain, heat, cold, etc... I have yet to go to an Appleseed that hasn't had at least a few rifles fail. No better time to find out...

And above all ... it's a heck of a good time.

What if the .22 I plan on bringing has a red dot sight? Will I get drummed out?

Not at all. I shoot with a 3-9 scope, wife prefers a scope on her rifle, lots of guys shoot with irons, some with dots ... run whatcha brung!

This is their first one in central Az at the new Buckeye range. Thanks for posting this because no one in Az has been spreading the word on the local forums. The shoot is this weekend in Az

I went to the Saturday portion of an Appleseed Shoot last year in Wisconsin. Couldn't make Sunday.

Did not shoot as well as I thought I would. I really need a scope and hadn't brought a scoped rifle.

Learned something new about using a sling.

Had a great time, overall, and really appreciated hearing the history of April 19, 1775 in Lexington and Concord.

Hopefully you'll be attending? Drag along a friend or two if you do - more people makes the firing line sound that much better.

Thanks for posting this. Found one a reasonable distance from me and plan on taking the kids.

Is there going to be any around Arkansas??

I just checked the schedule - as of right now, there are no shoots scheduled for Arkansas.

There are, however, shoots scheduled for Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Kentucky... Shoot me an email (my address is in my profile) and I'll be happy to send you a copy of the schedule.

If you can get a range to host (formal or informal - some Appleseeds happen on private land) and a group of people interested, we'll work with you to get instructors to Arkansas.
