UPDATED-Bad day at the range...

Well first thing
Thank God he was there with you
My Dad and his best friend reloaded all of my life and we have seen some crazy stuff but this is the most extreme I have ever seen...
I am so glad u were not more seriously hurt...
your face is very easy to make bleed very badly even with a small cut
Anything can be replaced but you are the most important thing
I am so glad you are ok
Thank u for sharing this with us
This is a great thread that all thinking they want reloading info should read first
Even the most experienced of us can have problems with reloading
God Bless,John
Truly sorry you lost your beautiful gun too

Yikes!! I’m glad you’re ok for the most part and not injured any worse. What a horrific experience to go through... Best wishes.

This is the reason I use a turret press, I just don't trust those that automatically throw the charge and then set the bullet. Before I seat bullets, I have X number of charged chases in my loading block and visually check each prior to seating a single bullet. Then as I remove each case from the block, I again visually check it prior to setting it in the press. This should also prevent squibs too. Once, back in the 60s I saw a case of the same thing from factory ammo.

I've seen another 629 do exactly the same thing! That top strap could have slit your throat wide open! You were very lucky!

Thanks TAC. This was no fault of the gun. It was all me. Double charged a case. Sucks, but quite a learning experience.

Oh, also I am happy to know you are alright and got away with as little trouble as you could have asked for!! 8.4 TG seems a lot and will surely be a rather stout load I guess. I use 3.3 in my 9mm.

That said: How about a squibb? Then your barrel gets sealed off and you fired another round behind it. I guess you looked through whats left of the barrel and there is no obstruction?

I use TG mostly and a lot. I have a light mounted shining in the case before seating and I look into each an every case when I seat the bullet. I am hoping to see any empty case or double charge.

I had a squibb once and caught it...lucky me. Thats when I installed the light.

The barrel looks good enough to go on another gun. No doubt this was a double charge.

Something similar happened to a friend of mine. His buddy was reloading .30-06 ammo for an old Remington 742 rifle. He had just purchased a new digital scale and he claimed he got confused with setting grams vs grains. The entire receiver blew up violently into may pieces. Like you, my friend ended up with several pieces of brass embedded deep into his cheek and other parts of his face. Several days later he looked like he was beaten with a baseball bat! Other than a few scars, no other apparent injuries. They also chose to leave one piece in his cheek. The guy didn't even apologize or offer to help pay for medical if needed.

Everyone please be careful out there, slow down and double check your work.

Glad you posted the photos. That is one of the more perfect example guns I have seen. That gun would make a great display at gun shows. Maybe you could rent it out. Most people haven't got the nerve to tell about their mistakes. I like Titegroup as it is accurate in my 45s. You messed up a nice shirt. Is your pants ok?

It takes a lot longer but I meticulously measure each charge on a single stage press. I set my powder to drop just under what I want then use a powder trickler to get it spot on. Don’t use any electronic scales either. I know it’s probably not necessary but it works. Slow but very efficient. I also like powders that take up a lot of space. Unique. Trail boss.

My pants and underwear are good. Just recently watched "The Revenant" again. With what Glass went through I can't complain about my injury.

With the amount of blood that was leaking from you, be glad no one applied a tourniquet to your neck to stop the bleeding.
Looks like you've got a couple of spare parts that you can salvage.
Just trying to put a positive spin on a real sucky situation. Glad your are ok, but your face will probably look like **** in 24-48 hours.
