I have a question for the experts. I could swear I saw references to Model 15 revolvers in the past that lettered as USAF shipped, but lacking the USAF or US markings. But I cannot find anything in my notes and references, so I might be misremembering or confusing with some other military S&W. Has anybody seen this in a confirmed factory letter? Also, I see the USAF contracts ran into 1969. Is that a hard date, or were any shipped at the tail end in 1970? TIA guys!

There were US Army and Navy shipments, mostly of 4" RB model 10s, during this era.

I cannot recall seeing a lettered USAF model 15 without a frame stamping; in theory, any TH/TT gun of that era might have been part of the military contract, but I would guess most owners would not have requested a letter.

There have been some very good threads on Airforce Model 15's in the past you should be able to bring up with the search feature.

While I do not focus on the Air Force guns
Iirc they were 15-2's pulled from commercial production fit with the wide Target hammer and wide target trigger then stamped USAF.
If that turns out to be true aren't you paying the premium for the stamp ( well I suppose for the govt shipping destination too)
for what is an otherwise standard 15-2 ?
Seems the stamp is the important part that makes it different.
