A question for those of you who have a duplicate of your EDC/CCW gun:

Have you ever actually REALLY needed the duplicate?

I’m asking because I’m considering buying a duplicate, but also wondering if this is truly a necessity or just me falling into the trap of what-if-ing too many future unknown and unlikely scenarios. I could find many other good uses for that money.

No, I don’t do the duplicate gun thing. I’ve never understood it.

If you are involved in a shooting, the cops will take the gun you used.

If it is a really bad shooting, they’ll take your duplicate too.

If not, buy another one if you need to.

The odds of any of the above happening? As close to zero as you can get.

My IDPA competition pistol is the same make & model as my usual carry. Sights a little different and trigger pull a tad lighter but still the same. All the heavy wear goes on the game gun. Carry gun gets shot periodically for re-familiarization.

I haven't needed a CC duplicate, though I have needed a CC alternate when one of the carries needed to be sent back to be fixed.

They will take your gun and with luck you will get it back when the case is disposed of, so what! most of us have other appropriate guns to choose from in the mean time and a duplicate of the one you lost for a while is not necessary if you are familiar with a variety of firearms or at least able to adapt to something else for that period of time. The other thing is that the chance of you being involved in a civilian shooting where this becomes an issue is slight but entirely possible.

One possibility is a dedicated car gun the same as your EDC. Rig it up so you can get to it instantly. In a holster, under a shirt and winter jacket, with a seat belt over it, your EDC will take seconds to get out. Seconds you don't have if thugs run up to you at a red light.

EDC pistol does not have to be a duplicate of the car/truck gun. Later can be an AR pistol, for example.

Duplicates are nice but in my Life have never been needed YET!! :D
I've done this with Heckler & Kochs, Smith & Wessons, Glocks, Sigs, Rugers etc.
It's a Sickness & will only get worse until you DIE

I did

I used to be issued a Beretta 92, and that was my personal as well. I still have a couple of 92's and love the guns. I've trained hard with them for many years. I'm in corrections now, so Im not issued a gun, and my EDC is a S&W shield. I always liked the muscle memory of keeping things simple. That's what I felt comfortable with, your mileage differ.

Do you mean, you want a brace of pistols to carry at the same time, like Wild Bill's two Colt Navy's? Or a second to fall back on if the first one breaks or goes away for some reason? I have two J frames just because I like 'em. But being familiar with the drill for the one carrying over to the other is helpful. Commonality of ammo and mags/speedloaders is also a plus, as well as holsters. Trading grips back and forth to see what suits you, kinda like Barbies.....
But even if you didn't carry, no reason not to have two of one thing. Twelve years ago I had two cased 25-2s, for no other reason than I liked 'em, and I could. In a younger era, I had three Fender Stratocasters at the same time. Even now, I have two model 10s, tho one is a blue pencil bbl. and the other a nickel HB.
Sounds like you want to but are afraid it would seem redundant. I'd say get it. You can always trade it later for something else....

My EDC = my service weapon, a Glock 17 with one exception, my EDC has had some trigger work.

I’m the original poster.
I probably should have specified…
Currently I only own the 1 gun.
I would not carry the second/duplicate gun.
The second/duplicate gun would sit in a safe unless my current gun had to go in for repairs or was confiscated.

Have them? Yes My carry guns all date from the late 80s and early 90s and are no longer made.

Needed them? No

My duplicates are mostly "used" guns I picked up back in the 1990s. 39xxs,69xxs and Beretta 92 Compacts......mostly "as new in box" and too cheap to leave behind..... often with 3 or 4 mags included.

Actually have three 3" 66s Bought 2 new in 1988 for $270 each OTD. Came across a used one in a LGS about 2000 for $325........couldn't leave it behind.

I use my duplicate 642 to train so my EDC 442 doesn't get a high round count.

My EDC is an S&W 638. I've thought about buying a 637 and might if I even get a real good deal.

I would observe you are over thinking. I would suggest you can certainly have a duplicate but I have a alternate sidearm, not the same model, should I not have access for my primary.

First of all, no one welcomed you on your first (other) thread, so welcome!

To me, buying a second gun as a backup to your first makes sense. I may have passed over that threshold a while back. :) On a purely practical level a second Shield Plus that won't require different gear, especially magazines, makes a lot of sense. But if you have the funds and desire to branch out, why not?

A backup revolver would be nice, accessories would be relatively cheap and no spare magazines to buy. Good luck in your decision.

Although I do keep a Spare Tire in my trunk ... I have never fallen into the duplicate gun thing ... Money has always been tight for me and the gun makers are always coming out with new and improved and interesting models in different calibers ... when / if I get extra money I tend to buy something I don't have ... a two gun SA fast draw rig would be the only time I might consider duplicate revolvers .
It's like cars ... I own two cars but they are completely different ... a 1968 Chevelle Sport Coupe and a 2015 Toyota 4 Runner .
