Use your turn signal

I just had to replace the battery in my truck after 11yrs.It's clear to me that constant usage of my turn signals led to it's shortened life span.

In Houston many don't use turn signals because those behind them figure you must see something up ahead so they jump into the lane cutting you off.

Once I check the gap and signal, I am moving. PERIOD. I have been rear-ended twice by people who thought they would get around me. My trailer hitch puts one awful dent in their hood.

Where's the evil old crumgudeon smiley??

The problem is with the way cars are designed. People only have two hands and two feet. Our hands are busy with the steering wheel in one hand and a cell phone in the other. The right foot works the gas and the brake. But since most cars are automatic the left foot has nothing to do. So, if cars were designed to activate the turn signals with the left foot, turn signals could be used more often. Problem solved!

No doubt Houston and Dallas drivers are clueless about what the turn signal lever does. But I'd bet they get used in both those cities combined more so than they do in Austin. And yes, that item is no longer standard equipment on high end cars although it is on all pickups including those that are $60,000.00 and higher. hardcase60

Then you have the opposite - those folks who leave their signal on. True story: I got on the expressway behind an older lady (at the time) who was driving a Dodge mini van. She had her left turn signal on. I passed her (she was driving under the speed limit) and went on down the road. About 60 or 80 miles later, I pulled off to go to a fireworks store and browse around. After looking around, I purchased a few items and got back on the expressway. About 20 or 30 miles later, I came up behind the same lady and - you guessed it - her turn signal was still on!

Turn signals have always been a pet peeve of mine. I use them religiously and disdain drivers who don't. I've even been known to tell people (when the opportunity arose) that they should take their car in for servicing because the turn signals don't work. Yeah, I've gotten some pretty interesting responses. :D

I think that some folks are afraid to use their turn signal lights, maybe they think that they are going to burn out and are irreplaceable?

True story here. Growing up my dad always had a pickup and mom a car. We went in to trade moms car in on a newer model, dad was doing his usual sales job on moms car being so well taken car of, then he added...the turn signals are like new, they have never been used!! Sad thing is he was probably right. For me, I use them religiously.

I've been told that using your turn signals is a sign of weakness. I was told that by my son, who we ALL know is smarter than his dad.

I can vouch for Floridians NOT using turn signals. They think they're the only ones on the road who matter. I despise waiting to turn right as you come along from my left, and then slow down and turn down my street without signalling. I would have turned long ago if I'd known you were turning.

No, in deep south Texas-the deeper you go-the worst it gets. I just had an idiot hit my rear bumper Thursday about noon-she was on her cell phone......

Funniest bumper sticker as seen in Florida:

WHEN I GET RETIRE I AM GOING TO MOVE UP
NORTH AND DRIVE IN THE LEFT LANE

Funniest one ive seen has nothing to do with this thread. But ill refrain from posting it anyway though my fingers wanna do so.:D

That's the odd thing about living in small town West Virginia.
People do signal but they seem to have no idea what "right of way" means. But in a good way
When you meet another car at a 4 way intersection, first they signal then they smile and wave the other guy through whether or not they have the right of way.
It's when we travel that people start acting like jerks.

We were traveling in Alexandria Virginia to visit with my wife's parents and I was complaining about people changing lanes without signaling. My wife reminded me that in Virginia, if you signal a lane change, that just tells the jerk in the other lane to speed up and cut you off.
"Yeah, well I'm driving a full size Dodge Ram and I signal."
And yes, I've had these jerks blowing their horns at me when I moved over anyway.

Here they just put their lights on bright then do as you mentioned.

The worst drivers in Florida came here from NY, NJ, MI, IN, MA. No turn signals and they all drive 60 in the left lane. The nicest are the folks from Ontario Canada where they use signals AND get out of the way.

Very good video on turn signals and quite frank.
I seen a guy the other day riding a motorcycle and actually giving a hand signal to turn. You don't see that much anymore.
Most of the younger generation don't even know what a hand signal is or how to use it. All they know is middle finger hand signal and that is a shame.
