Searched but found nothing on this yet.

Reports of several US Military Academy cadets (West Point) on spring break in Florida have overdosed on fentanyl-laced cocaine. Couple of their companions who apparently did not indulge were poisoned when giving CPR to their buddies.

I would not have expected this. Appointment to the military service academies is a great honor as well as a great opportunity for first class education and career potential.

No word yet on any disciplinary action. I assume that this will be considered as a very serious matter, probably resulting in expulsions, perhaps court martial proceedings, potential for bad conduct discharges.

In addition to disciplinary actions these cadets are almost certain to lose any career opportunities. Cadets are on active duty while attending, paid a stipend equal to pay grade E-5 (currently ~ $2500 per month under two years, $2700 over two years), full medical, dental, accomodations, and credit toward military retirement. Upon graduation and commissioning as 2nd lieutenants the starting pay would be about $3300 per month plus allowances for housing and other perks. Retirement at half-pay for life can be had at 20 years service (16 years after graduation from the service academy).

The service academy education alone has a reported value of about $1.5 million, and there is no student loan debt for the graduates.

I hope these young folks recover from their medical emergencies. I'm reasonably certain they will greatly regret their serious errors in judgement.

4 OD'd. 2 tried to attempt CPR and they were exposed to the fentanyl and also OD'd.

I've never heard of anyone OD'ing from giving someone CPR.

I know fentanyl in patch form soaks into your skin, but even then it would be near impossible to actually OD from just touching a patch.

If it was mixed with cocaine and snorted up their noses, how would the 2 performing CPR have contact with it?

Many drugs can enter the body quite effectively through the lining of the mouth, nitroglycerin is commonly administered in such a way. Fentanyl can be at least 80 times more potent than morphine, so attempting to breathe into another's mouth, with fentanyl around the lips, could be fatal.

Up their nose

Definitely not Jack Reacher material!

I’ve met these Affluent Military kids before,
they never make good Officers. Daddy usually
got them to where they are. Don’t like them.

Got a chuckle the other day…..met a Marine
(I could tell he was something Military) we
got to talk’n; he says… Sir what did you do
in the Army? I said…please don’t call me Sir,
I worked for a living. Marine…..says, good one.

Hm. The Newsweek story says that all cadets involved were on the West Point football team.

I‘m not intimately familiar with the West Point recruiting system, but there isn‘t any danger they might be recruiting football players as cadets who get a pass on other questions of character and suitability, like at private colleges, is there?

Suppose there could be......

Let them serve the next 4 years behind bars at hard labor, then a
dishonorable discharge.

I'm sure they will be expelled and regret this the rest of their lives. That would be sufficient punishment, imo.
Guess you never made any foolish choices when you were young? I know I did.

With the way today's society is they will move on with nary a thought of what they did was wrong. Only that the military is all screwed up because they could not do their drugs and have things handed to them.

I would hope that's not the case, if it was, I would retract my prior statement.
