Value Model 58

I was back in the LGS today. Took another look at the Model 58. 2 gun guys both agreed that the finish was original and in excellent condition. Someone mentioned that the side plate didn't look right. I thought it was absolutely fine. Guy behind the counter was sure the gun was sitting there for over a year. No box or paperwork. With the information found here I explained why I thought the gun was worth $700-$800. He said he will check with the owner.

I just don't think the TT , TH and the Target grips would be a positive focal point for me . I paid $775 for mine a few yrs ago . It only had target grips . I bought a set of PC Magnas's from a forum member here to bring it back to what I thought would be more original . At the time I thought I paid top price . It seems they have gone up , a lot . The price of $1500 seems like average in todays mkt . I don't know that they will get any cheaper as S&W isn't making them anymore . The newer ones have the key lock which is a turn off for me . I would give more to get one of the originals . Just my thoughts . Good luck , Regards Paul

I have a very nice S serial Model 58. It has diamond target grips which I'm told that it came with. I bought it from the original owner's son. I don't think that I would take $1500 for it because I like it and it would be hard to find another one like it.

I bought this one in 2019 at a fair price. No box or docs, but I don't care in the least about that. It has the original finish, grips, trigger, and hammer, which is what was important to me. The finish is worn, but that doesn't bother me either, because I like to shoot it and not worry about it.

I have only shot my own handloads in it, made from 210 grain home cast SWC bullets and either Unique or 2400 powder.

I mostly shoot lighter loads in it, because the full magnums, with those skinny PC grips, will tear skin from my hand.

The way the prices on the N frames are soaring today. I think the posters m58 isn’t too far off. Grips can be replaced, the rest of it appears to look great.

The m58 in nickel is the first s&w n frame I ever shot with 41 mag federal 210 gr JHP bullets. After carrying and shooting 44 magnums most of my gun life I’m very impressed on how well the n frame is balanced, I think it’s seen as a under dog but it’s really a top dog in its own class.

Cool letter. Thanks for posting. Almost all of the 58’s that I have seen had standard hammer, trigger, and the PC Magna grips. I have seen a few with TH, TT in some combination as well as target grips. Cool to see factory documentation showing mods on those other guns could be factory!
