The son of a co-worker is selling his M&P15 package and I'm interested but when I asked for a price, the answer was, "whatever I can get". The kid worked for me while going to college and I want to be fair not only to me but to him. I am AR challenged especially when I looked at the S&W website and see they make a bazillion different versions but this is what I saw.
M&P15 with a suitcase kind of handle on top.
Bushnell scope
3 extra high capacity mags.
Front grip handle
Battery operated light mounted under the barrel
Soft case for the rifle and one for the extra mags.
My inexperienced self thinks $1K is close but what do you in the know think?

Do you mean it was this model?

Without knowing what kind of light is included, I'd offer somewhere around 800-900. Pmags are going for around 12 bucks and a grip from Magpul can be had for 50 so there's not much value there.

The scope could be worth some money, but it depends on the model.

It really comes down to how much you're willing to pay, but there are AR deals all over so it's a buyers market.

Yes, that's the model. As I say, I'm intellectually challenged on AR's as they've never crossed my radar but the kid's been trying to sell the thing and I want to help him out but not to the extent I overpay the market. There are a lot of firearms I'm price savy on but AR's aren't one of them.
THanks

Depending on the model of Bushnell, and I'm betting it's not an Elite, $800 is closer. There is simply not much value in used mags anymore with new ones going for $12-$16, soft cases don't really cost much new, and even a top quality light's not going to be worth much used.

What you are looking at is the M&P 15 Standard model. Standard just means it's not one of the "kitted" rifle so it comes very M4-like - that is no fancy furniture or rail setups, no added cost sight packages, etc. It is very solid rifle, and has chromed barrel, gas key and carrier so if you want an M4 it's a great choice.

Now, you can purchase that rifle NEW for between 900-1K pretty much anywhere ($950 at Buds Gun Shop), and if you qualify for Mil/LEO/1R discounts you can get for $870 at BudsPolicySupply. Bear that in mind when assessing the used value. Did the kid shoot it a little and store it in his closet, or did he shoot the **** out of it and leave it in the truck all the time...

I agree with the others, the scope is going to be the wildcard. If some cheap low end Wally World Bushnell it really would add little value to the deal, but if it's a nicer model, then you can adjust. The other stuff your looking at $100-$150 when new probably, depending on the light - so call it $75 used. You didn't mention ammo, usually these "take it all" sales include some ammo as well.

I'll fall into the same mix as the others, $800 seems about the most I would pay, if that. I've been in the same situation with a remarkably similar circumstance, and same as you wanted to be fair for both - Sometimes people just need a reality check on what their stuff is worth. They've bought it during the "scare" so overpaid to begin with, added a couple hundo in accessories, and only put a couple hundred rounds through it so they think they can turn around and sell it for close to what they paid... That's just not the case anymore - as the other poster mentioned, it's a buyers market right now. At some point you just need to step back and say look, I can buy it new for this amount, so let's get realistic on a price. So yes I'd say $800 seems about right, maybe $900 at the most if a nice scope, or if the rifle is just basically pristine. And adjust if there is ammo included...

And just to play devils advocate - Even understanding the background of the deal - if you think you might want to change some stuff up, ie changing to a rail or modular handguard setup, or go with a Red Dot and some nice folding buis, change up the furniture, etc - then you don't want to buy this rifle. You instead should be looking for a 15T or MOE, ORC, etc that has most of that already in (or not in) the build of the gun. Otherwise you will just wind up adding $500 or more to the price of what you buy the Standard for... For instance, the ORC is a great "builder" rifle...if you look around you can find it for not too much more than the Sport, and it's ready to be dressed up however you like..

Wow, sorry that got long fast... didn't mean to ramble on.

Great information from all. Thank you. If I move forward with this, I see it as little more than a varmint getter. I'm much more attuned to bolt and lever action rifles and the kid needs some cash to move so I thought I'd at least put a number on the table. I'm leaning towards telling him I'll put a standing offer of $800 and if he can sell it to someone for more great but if not, he'll at least have my number as a backup.

If 100 extra will not an issue for you, offer 900-950 make the kid happy and become new owner. Sounds like you reallywant to help him. 100 extra worth more than that. You will earn from the kid the kindness, thankful. And great relationship when he thinks about you or when you 2 go shoot together. Worth it?

I'm in agreement with this. This seems more than just a stranger-to-stranger transaction. I personally think the rifle is worth more than $800...more like $900...and I wouldn't lowball the kid just to save a hundred bucks. And the market will take care of itself...you don't have to worry about "overpaying the market".

Strip it down and see how well he took care of it. Then grab a box of ammo and go shoot it at 50-100 yards and see what it does on paper. If it key holes and/or won't keep a reasonable group it could be shot out.

Big question,do you trust the kid ?. I know some low lifes that would rip off their own mother in a heartbeat.

Look at the barrel (up by the flash hider) and see what it says. 1-8 5R and shoots good,I'd go the 900+. If all's good...

1-9 5R I'd go 800-850 tops, maybe.

I think your $800 offer is fair, based on the info given and the market today, provided the model has been identified correctly. It at least puts a number out there. You can go up, if you need to. I think a fair price for the rifle is anywhere from $715 to $750. Then, if you are interested in the aftermarket stuff he has, half off of new retail is typical... maybe a little more money for the optic, depending on what it is.
