I don't think much of these grip for value, comfort is good, I believe they said made in Italy under them when I had them off,

would that be the Herretts you mention?

Also, if anyone knows, if the serial # on a 29-4 doesn't start with N, is it actually actually an N frame?

Yes, it's an N frame. "Between 1980 and 1983 all models were transitioned to a serial number system that consists of three letters followed by four numerical digits." (From S&W Standard Catalog 4th Edition.)
