Very Rare Smith & Wesson revolver-DSS

Still looking for value estimates.........
Steve
You got a hole in one on the first reply. ;)

Again, the 19-5 DSS/CSP does not appear to deviate much if at all from what comparable condition, non-P&R 19 snubbies sell for. One would think it would, but it doesn't; I pay a little extra attention because I like the DSS version, but as you can see from this thread alone, the finish itself throws a lot of people off (and sometimes gets greats deals), and I think that's part of the reason why only aficionados of this particular version of the otherwise ubiquitous 19 snubby know or care much.

Yours looks from the pictures to be in very good cosmetic shape; presumably it's mechanically sound, too. You don't mention whether original box, tools and docs are included, which does affect final price.

Your best bet for a sense of what you might get in trade value or private sale is to look at what regular 19 snubbies are selling for. Fellow member 5Wire is the in-house tracker of this; linked is, I believe, his most recent post tracking sales.

Again, if gun alone in excellent condition, I think you're apt to get in the $700 range, with some swing in either direction based on changes in the weather.

I bought mine is the Spring for $500 in a private sale on our Georgia website. And it was hanging around for a while. Excellent condition, original Pac grips, gun only. I don't believe the matte finish is desirable to the typical owner. It's worth more than $500 tho, you may need some patience to find someone looking for this model.

An old dog with a poor refinish................................and a different serial number than usual! Nice going. I kinda like the looks of those, guys.

These are product code 100701.

Several months ago I turned down $1150 for one that appears to be unfired since leaving the factory. Complete in correct box. That offer was made sight unseen

One of the LTs that saw mine told me he had to have it and made me promise that if I ever accepted an offer for it I had to give him a chance to match it first.

They are as someone stated. Ahrends cocobolo...pretty. But, at least to me, kinda slippery. Especially with 145gr Silvertips.
Ahrends offers two coatings: a synthetic, and a Tung oil. The synthetic definitely has more glide to it, the Tung a little grippier.

Yours might be the synthetic, and if so, stripping and re-coating it in an oil-based finish might help; some people give the stocks a gentle rough-grit sanding while stripped -- all to make it a bit grippier.

Alternately, you can send them back to Ahrends and they'll refinish in Tung.

I do find the synthetic stain a bit slippery, too. ;)

NRA Modern Gun Condition Standards "new", with correct, perfect box, tools and docs yields exponential returns again. ;)

I would love to get my hands on one of these, have a good family friend that started back when it was referred to as the Office of Security (S.Y.) and became DSS in '83. After the model 19 he said they got the Sig 228 which he kept until he moved to another agency.

One of these days......

Correct, my father was in DS from 1983 until 2001 . I am sorely tempted by this 19 . I remember his rather fondly (as well as his 228). He never carried it . At the time you could opt to carry a personally owned 19 . He carried a 4" (that he still has) . He is a large framed 6'2" guy and he said it carried just as well as the 2"

I have a box of DS issued .357 ammo around somewhere that would pair up nicely with this :)
