US Veteran
Fellow Veterans, all of us once swore an oath when we stepped forward to serve our country. On this Veterans Day, I invite you to remember that oath and what we promised. I also invite you to reply and post your branch, ratings or ranks, dates of service, and anything else you would like to say. I salute all of you!
I, (NAME), do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God.
United States Coast Guard Reserve
1980 to 1984 (active duty) 1984 to 1986 (active reserve)
ENS to LT (O-1 to O-3)
USCGC Vigilant, USCGC Tampa (plankowner)
Also, USCGC Northwind, USCGC Gentian, USCGC Point Arena
Semper Paratus!
EDIT: As a couple of posters have pointed out, the Oath taken by officers differs slightly from the one shown above, deleting the portion about obeying the orders of the President of the United States and "officers appointed over me." By swearing to uphold the Constitution, officers place themselves under the authority of the President as Commander in Chief. All this notwithstanding, upon joining the military and before embarking on training as an enlisted member or officer, the first Oath taken is the one shown above and, as such, is the Oath that all veterans have in common.
EDIT of 11/30/2014: It's come to my attention that the Oaths taken by officers and enlisted members of the U.S. Military is being used prominently by a national organization whose purpose, goals, and methods I do not endorse. My original post should not be construed by anyone as a statement of support for this organization.
