Victory as Sea

I watched it when I was a kid. I think it came on at 8:00 AM just after the station signed on for the day. IIRC the station signed off at 10:00 PM during the week and 11:00 on the weekend. All both of them...

When Victory At Sea came on, my father would leave the room, and my mother would tell me to change the channel. My father served in the North Atlantic and later in the Pacific. The program revived too many bad memories for him.

I use to watch that series of programs also. One weekend I am watching and the narriator said, "and there goes Commander (or was it Captain) Earl Henny and his squadron strafing the beach in support of the Marines landing...."

Well in 1988 I knew an Earl Henney from the DD coffee shot. A true gentleman. He was, I knew, in the Navy as an ordinary seaman at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. So I would ask him about it the next time I saw him.

And that pilot was him alright. He flew off a carrier but I can not recall which one. He was very humble about it. He stayed in the Navy, raised a family but some how spent 13 or 17 years at sea. He went on to one or two more careers. One was with a Defense Company. When I knew Earl I was driving a city bus (SEPTA) and he was driving part time a school bus for Cheltenham Township. He loved children.

As I said he was a true gentleman. He was active with the Shiners and volunteered at their hospital for crippled children here in Philadelphia. I have a nice photo of him at the shop drinking his coffee. If I can find it I would like to post it here as a sort of tribute to him.

I have spent some time online in a vain attempt to find any more info about him. Ancestry dot com has something on him I think but I am not subscribed to them this year. If anyone can look it up it might be Earl J Henny. I have thought about him fondly many times over the years. As for the greatest generation, he definitely qualifies.

Absolutely one of the greatest film or TV soundtracks ever, but what would you expect from Richard Rodgers?

As for the show, I used to like to watch it in one sitting when they showed (on local PBS, no less!) it on the 4th of July here. I simply won't countenance anything which portrays the Germans and Japanese as "victims" of anything else besides their own ignorance, stupidity and malice. You certainly won't get any of that swill from "Victory at Sea".

I bought the album as a kid.

Kinda out of context for a kid music purchase today

Well Tex, You are in luck. You can listen to the complete album for free on YouTube. Here is the main theme. I kind of laugh when I hear the instruments mimicking Morse code.

Do we have any code readers on here? Wouldn't it be wild if it really is Morse code? "To all ships at sea and all ports of call"

I have the real videos of victory at sea. There offering a complete package deal on the DVD. I purchased the "world at war" dvds too.

Remember the channel 9 once showed it non stop night and day. Channel 9 remember the Joe Franklin show?

Mom would tell us to "watch for your Father". He was 33 months in the ETO.
LTC

In similar fashion, my Dad jumped out of his chair, when, watching an episode of "The World at War," he saw his sister from a street scene film clip of Dutch civilians in 1942. Phoned her shortly thereafter. I always look for her when I watch this episode...

Many people in show biz owe Joe Franklin a debt of gratitude...

one of the video stores in town had the dvd set for $10 in the discount section. it is still one of the best

I saw it at Wm in the $5 bin. I wanted to pick up a copy but forgot--and havent seen it there for a couple months. This was the entirre series and published by mill creek--whih is one fo those who doesnt clean up video and sound. They will have more again sometime--get mine then.

You should be aware that the soundtrack was available and part of an LP album. If you don't already have it, I'm sure you can flush it out online. I'd send you mine but it didn't survive the last cull of LPs.

I had the album decades ago. I loved listening to it so much that--one day when i got back from school--I found it didnt survive my older brothers pellet gun. Its probably on CD by now.

The one I liked and watched all the time was "Navy Log" in the 50's.
Gee, may have influenced why I joined the Navy... :)

Ive heard of that and noticed someone on epier was selling the series. Never seen it but--sounds good.

Some others I highly recommend are:

Battleline--which cameout in the early 1950s.It had a host with the last nameof Bishop--and two interviewed folks--one who fought in oposing armies of the ones that were being talked about. That was agreat series--sowas the origial version of: The Twentieth Century--hosted by Walter Cronkite. Some newer ones I highly remommend are: both of the 4-part-2 hr long episode from: Battlefields--as well asThe Eagle and the Bear I think hosted by Richard Basehart, Secrets of War hosted by Charlton Heston, and I cant remember the proper nameof this one but wa hosted by gerald McRainey--somekind of a vs series--like Patton vs Rommel---and such.
