Hello all,

I have a 38SW modified to 38spl Victory. The hammer will not cock in double action. I've pulled the side plate, cleaned and lubed. It looks to me like the hammer stops to far forward for the sear to catch an pull the trigger back. I don't really see any wear. Can anyone enlighten me on what mat be the issue before I start to disassemble further? Thanks to all.. I can post a pic later if it helps.

Does it function correctly in SA mode? Perhaps someone converted it to SA only when they converted it to 38 special. It's hard to tell without seeing a picture of it.

Welcome to the forum.

Do you have any other Smith hand ejectors to compare to? That will give it away in a heart beat.

By removing the hammer 'fly' (double action sear) you can make a single action only. Is it missing?
It's the shiny lever pinned to the front of hammer in the 1st photo of post #9 in this thread:

This is not the same as your gun, but do you see the little lever sticking out of the front of the hammer? Confirm that your gun has one.

Is the hammer spring tension screw in the front grip strap tight?

Hondo....Attached is a pic of my gun all looks well. The sear deflects backwards and the trigger doesn't grab it. If I pull the hammer back ever so slightly the sear will grab it. My though is the hammer rest to far forward after shot? Looking for any help!! Thanks!!

Kurt

I would remove the DA sear and clean behind it and perhaps replace the spring. Can you pull it forward at all from the bottom?

Thanks BT ..I have cleaned the gun with brake cleaner and lightly lubed.
That said I see your point, possibly dirt behind the small step at the top of the sear. To do that, release the mainspring, the whole hammer will come out?

Great description and forensic work on what's not working right!

Yes the whole hammer would come out. But just looking at it, I believe the DA hammer sear is worn. It should have a sharp edge where it's contacted and lifted by the trigger sear. Easy part to find. It's easily detached from hammer with hammer removed from the lock work.

I'd send you one but can't find laying around.

Sounds like you are on the right track. I have an older M&P with a similar issue. The sear is just a tad too short so the trigger spur doesn't start to lift the hammer as early as it should and as a consequence, the hammer and trigger bind instead of interlacing like gears. I'm currently experimenting with different hammer/sears and trigger combinations and have made some improvement but not quite there yet. Single action is fine. You can find sears on ebay sometimes as well but mostly as part of the hammer assembly. Don't forget to check the spring too.

There is a set of figures (from McHenry & Roper) in the gunsmithing forum - I think - that show the DA sequence very clearly
