View from my deer stand

I guess i'll post a few of mine that i've been working on. Rifle season isnt until November 2nd, so i still have a little time. These are about a month or so old. But they should give u an idea of what im up to. These are just a few....I'll post some more tomorrow when i dig them off my camera.

These 2 are from my new stand. This was the day I was disking it all up and getting it planted. 1 picture is looking down it and the 2nd picture is looking back down the other way.

This is a picture of a new spot ive decided to setup a climber on. This is all natural area, nothing planted and nothing cut down. This is just the way the land is in the particular spot. Its actually between 2 of my gator ponds that ive taken some of my gators out of.

Last picture here is a view in front of one of my climbers. Im actually on my 4 wheeler here at the spot. So from the stand i can look down here and also look left and right about 100 yards.....The area to the right just over the low area is my corn where one of my duck blinds is located. Also if u look about half way down the clearing, u see a small tree, look a little more to the right and u can see my Tripod Stand (i also hunt out of this).

Smitty357,
Wow, some real nice open shooting. Many of our stands are in areas with limited views. In fact, I'm taking my grandson out on Nov 2nd (our Youth Hunt) and will purposely have him in a stand with 50yard maximum range...he's new to hunting so I'll make sure we only consider nice close shots with standing broadside deer. Chances are, I'll hold him to shots well within 50 yards.

First off never said i do not gun hunt. I will be hunting with A S&W pistol this year. I have stand hunted and will still say it's not hunting, the ability to sit on your rear and wait is not a skill. Stand placement may be a skill but not "hunting" from it. You want to "hunt" from a stand then more power to you. No I don't believe killing bucks will help with population control but I also believe you just don't want people shooting what you consider your bucks. I killed 5 deer with bow and two with gun last year so if you think killing twenty would bother me you are wrong. If you do not like what I have to say or think I do not belong then simply don't reply.

Btw some gorgeous land a few of you have.
Good luck on your deer hunting.

These are a few from one of my favorite little stands. This is also one of my oldest hunting spots on our land. There has been a many white flags picked up in this field. See how close my feeder is, lol.

This one is one of my favorite little duck honey holes. No duck blinds here, but its a nice spot to sit and relax by urself on the ground and call in some feathers. And of course, u know i have to have a deer stand close by. So these are pics from the stand.

This is one of my stands. It is 5X7 and looking through the woods down into the bottom I mow a strip about 12 ft. wide and 185 yds. long from the stand and put the bait pile 100 yds. from the stand. It has not been mowed this year and no bait pile because I have a broke foot and am not able to do the work. I don't think I will get to hunt this year. Larry

Stands? I hunt on the ground and i use a bow. Would not consider sitting in a stand (with or without bait) hunting. More like waiting, not much challenge in that.

If your area does not have "earn a buck" there is likely good reason for it. You claim deer are "pests" to local land owner and farmers yes? Do you not think getting rid of bucks will help slow the population growth of these "pests". Takes a buck to impregnate the doe.

You did indeed imply that you hunt only with a bow. You did indeed suggest that killing bucks is a viable method of population control You sound like a politician trying to convince us that what you said isn't what you really meant.

I also read your post before you edited out the "anal landowner" remark. Sounds like a typical case of class envy to me. I bet you think I should let someone like you come hunt for free, just to help with the herd control. That is a typical freeloader attitude amongst those who don't like us "anal landowners." As far as you are concerned, and the hundreds of others I have encountered with your attitude, the deer on my property damned sure do belong to me. Bucks and does. I spend thousands of dollars per year on taxes, fences, and general upkeep, not to mention the thousands I spend on conservation efforts. It takes a lot of nerve for some smart-*** to tell me I'm "anal" about my property. I have had gates stolen, pastures rutted, irrigation pipe driven over and ruined, gates left open, not to mention the 6 purchased feeder calves I had shot and left to rot in the pasture one opening weekend a few years back.

By the way, if I don't like what you have to say, I'll comment on it any time I damned well please. Why do you reckon they call it a forum? Besides that, I started the thread. You're the one who trolled it. I'll call out a troll every time.

I actually have access to land exactly like that. ;) :D
Admittedly, I have a "family in" because the landowner is my father-in-law's cousin, but my use of his land is hunting.

He despises deer, and he has gone to great lengths to keep them out of his crops and gardens, etc., all to no avail.

He was complaining about the deer problem, and I asked/offered to hunt some of the herd.
He joyfully accepted and gave me permission (all but asked me) to hunt.
I have taken several deer off his property. I get a free place to hunt, and he gets his herd whittled down, and I stock him with venison steaks and sausage.
The only payment he asks is dead deer.

Win-win. :D

Looks like we had the same idea.

Thanks to all for the deer stand pictures, it is a fun time of year for me. My cell phone pictures aren't as good as yours but I enjoy my time in the woods and on my stand with my new friends.

I have another one on a trailer like the one in the picture but it is 4X6. I moved it from it deer hunting place last spring and used it to shoot groundhogs. The broke foot has kept me from moving it back but it is in a good place for the groundhogs next spring. I like the stands on trailers so I can move them where I want them. Larry

You have inspired me, cbr600f3! Next summer I am going to apply for a depredation permit! I bet I can get a permit to shoot 30 or 40 of the vermin.:D

If you need any help, just give me a shout. I'll be more than happy to help feed the kids at the Georgia Baptist Childrens Home or whatever charity you want to donate them to.

Wild life does not belong to you, it's this attitude which compels me to call land owners anal. I hunt a lot of mfl (managed forest land) and i always speak with land owners before doing so even though it is not required. It is amazing to me at how many try to tell me what i can and cannot shoot, some even to the point of showing me trail cam pics of a buck that is "theirs". Mfl is a way for land owners to allow public on their land to hunt while receiving tax breaks on the land thus leaving them no control on who hunts or what they hunt. I also find it funny you assume your in a class above me because you own land, and i am the ***? You prove my point sir. I own a home in town how that makes me inferior to you escapes me. I judge people by who they are not what they own.
my apologies to those who hunt from a stand, it was not my intent to insinuate you are wrong in doing so but i often speak/type without much thought.
Cbr out.

Man that is some nice set ups you guys have. The one downside of living in Bayou Country to much swamp and marsh great for duck hunting but so so limited for deer set ups.

In Texas it is all private property mostly. I did hunt for years on FT Hood as well. The thing about deer stands is they are a reminder of all the people who used them. I was a hunting guide on FT Hood and we had stands that were still in use after 20 years. I would always build new ones and put them out. Since I was a Sergeant we would take the HUMVEE and do a land navigation/driver training course. We would go to my training area, give the GPS coordinates to the front seat guy and he would tell the driver where to go. We would meet up later and the soldiers would report what they found.
It was good training and for a lot of young soldiers they never drove in the woods or off road.
Sadly, I got a call in 2002 telling me to go to Kuwait, then Iraq and last to Afghanistan where I have now spent 10 years :(

This is my favorite thread!

I love all the great stand photos....!! I get ideas from you guys and will modify our stands as I get time.

We "encourage" all our hunters to drink little and use the "pee bottle" (gallon milk jug). Sure enough, about once every couple years a new hunter will "spread his scent" off the edge of the stand...it sure makes the bucks disappear for a while.
With only 175 acres...we can't really "manage" for big bucks...but we encourage hunters who have been at it a while to hold off on small bucks. Wait for the big boy you're willing to mount.

The small bucks are for the kids and new hunters. The "if it's brown it's down" philosophy is for the young and new hunters.

I can NOT wait to get my grandson Kylar out on November 2nd...I'm more excited for his hunt than for ANY hunt I've taken for myself. I was the same way when I took my son, daughter, nephew, niece, neighbor's kid, customer's grand daughter(s).....for me, it's ALL about introducing our sport to new hunters.
I sure appreciate all you guys do for new hunters.

Bob
