Volquartsen Ectractor

I was having FTE problems, bolt catching the round on the way out, pinching it.
Clean the chamber. 22LRs are dirty and have a nasty habit of building up a nice hard layer of carbon/crud in the chamber and the usual .22 bore brushes and bore snakes don't get it out well. They just leave you with a shiny layer of crud.

Once you get crud build up the case doesn't get blown out like it should so the bolt doesn't move back with the velocity it should and you see ejection issues.

I use a .243 bore brush on a piece of cleaning rod chucked in a drill motor to reach in thru the back. JUST going into the chamber, not down the bore. You can feel when you enter the barrel throat, stop there. The spinning brush (and your favorite powder solvent) will get the crud out and Brownells has brass cored brushes so you aren't going to damage anything. .243/.25 Rifle, per 3 : "SPECIAL LINE"
It's surprising how much crud you'll get out of a "clean" chamber if you go in with a bigger rotating brush.

Its like everyone that thinks the volquarsten extractor is a waste of money forgets that even S&W made a newer extractor to fight the issues it was causing by turning in the mount.

If S&W made a remake of the part there is obviously issues in all the old guns weather you experience the problem or not. Also if the volquarsten piece works as claimed it could help me with several issues my gun has.

1. Poorly Ejected rounds. Even with hot ammo I have about 1 in 20 rounds bounce off my salem 6 mag thats attached by coupler to the magazine in the gun. Its startling when hot brass lands on you even after bouncing off a mag. And this isn't due to a dirty gun....

2. FTE problems with cheap rimngton golden bullets that randomly stove pipe when I use my slide fire. About one in every 105 rounds or so.

Also to the guy that said why do it to a plinker gun thats like asking why tune our cars, or collect things, or enjoy ourselves. Folks do stuff for lots of reasons and it being a .22lr doesnt stop me one bit.

S&W did not "made a newer extractor to fight the issues it was causing by turning in the mount".

S&W did add a tab to the extractor plunger to keep it (the plunger) from rotating and letting the extractor escape.

Got the extractor in today. Gonna tear the gun back down and clean it all again. Taking it to the range tomorrow, will update with anything that happens, good or bad.

Got to put the gun on the range today with the new Volquartsen Extractor in. When I tell you I was hitting the guy 3 aisles down with ejected casings, its not a fib. This was most definitely my problem. Burned through almost 500 rounds in ~ 1.5 hours, not a single misfire, FTE, or OOB. When I was having at least one FTE every mag before hand, if not more.

Took plenty of video this time at the range with the new GoPro setup to catch it all in slow mo.

Glad you weapon is now working as should. But I say it again it is a improved design. I had no issues with ejections, but for whatever reason and however it ejects further.

Yeah, I am assuming I just had either a bent, broken, or some form of faulty extractor on mine. I will never know, as it was lost forever when I had my OOB. All I know is it is fixed now, and I couldn't be happier with the gun (for now...)

I too was getting FTEs and stovepipes perhaps 1-2 per 25 rounds the last time out. Didn't make any difference what ammo I was using (CCI Minimag, Armscor HP, bulk), and the rifle had been thoroughly cleaned the week before. The ejector was not loose and there didn't seem to be a gap between it and the bolt housing. But I also installed the the Volquartsen extractor today (took all of 1 minute). My 15-22 is only 5 months old and I have the newer style extractor pin, and nothing seemed damaged or amiss. But I'll hit the range Sunday afternoon when I get my Buck Mark out of jail and report back on the results.

Like Skee907, I am now a happy camper. I went to the range today with the new extractor and had zero failures in about 175 rounds. And yes, like others have reported, those spent casings were flying out like crazy.

I have not had any of the problems with my extractor at all but should be getting the VQ one soon, which i was going to use as a spare but i think, after hearing the positive reviews that i'll keep the original as a spare. Great to hear that the teething problems with all these new rifles are being straightened out...now on with the enjoyment :)
