Was the Field Sport optic made by Aimpoint? I decided to do some checking and this is what I found...

I emailed Aimpoint USA and asked if they made it for Field Sport. This was their response:

No sir this is untrue.

We do not make sights for other companies.

Thank you Rastoff.
That really gets to me! You go to a place where all that is there are people shooting, selling firearms, working on firearms, and supposed SAFTD/USCCA/CSAT trained Rangemaster's. You put your trust in the RM because of all the training that is required of him, to at least give you some advice on an accessory that very well might have to save your life one day! Or, am I looking at this the wrong way? Sure, I read about the red dot, watched videos, listened to peoples advice, and then came here and basically make a fool of myself for supporting it so highly! Heh, live and learn, right?

Not a fool D1, just learning like all the rest of us.

If there's one thing I've learned in the world of shooting, it's that there are myths everywhere. Just when you think you've got it nailed, someone comes along and tilts your world just a little.

I'm sure those guys were trying to give you the best info they had. Meh, they were just fed some wrong info themselves. It happens. No need to dwell on it.

I've spent plenty of time with cheap optics. Always been disappointed. I've learned the hard way that spending a little more generally gets you a better optic. That's not to say the one you have isn't a good one. It just may be a sleeper I haven't heard of.

I'm looking forward to your live fire review.

Almost certainly the rangemaster was fooled too. It happens. And it is true that sometimes companies make their product and put another name on it and sell it much cheaper. But I suspected from the start that the price difference was just too great on your budget red dot. The difference is in whether they use glass or plastic lenses. You just can't make a glass lens product for $25. But again I have seen stuff I know was made by a company and sold cheaper because it had a different brand on it. People will pay more for a name brand and they set the price based on what people will pay, not what it costs to build something.

Is it me, or does your $20 red dot & riser combo look EXACTLY like the Primary Arms red dot they sell for $90 with riser ????

Well... that's the issue, isn't it.

There's a zillion importers slapping labels on suspiciously similar looking optics. Here's some you can find on Amazon in less than a minute.

So how is anyone supposed to know the difference (if there is any difference) between all these? The answer is you don't. What you do know is that there are years of endless reviews on two sub $100 micros with generally few complaints-- Primary Arms and Bushnell TRS-25.

So the question is... does a person want to spend the time and money to travel to the range, range fees, ammo, targets and all the rest just to zero a dime store optic as an experiment to potentially save $25 over the PA or Bushnell? With the PA and Bushnell you've got a good bet it will deliver years of recreational service. Or do you want to roll the dice with an unknown Mugugaipan Tactical Death Ray that may or may not soon fail.

Darn it I couldn't afford the Mugugaipan Tactical Death Ray. I got the regular Mugugaipan Death Ray. :D

Agreed.
Admittedly, I probably overpaid at $220 for the Primary Arms/Holosun HS503g red dot.
But, I really love that ACSS reticle.
Nothing else out there like it, especially in a red dot,
as far as I know.
After a month of researching, I'm relieved that I'm done.

I use the sub $100 PA red dots or Aimpoint on an AR platform. Not much interested in anything in between with one exception... and that's the one you got. Really like that chevron reticle on the HS503g. Very nice.

I came to that conclusion based on the good advice that I've received from knowledgeable people, such as yourself. :)

Thank you to everyone for the good advice I've received.

do you have to work out just to hold it up to shoot?

Weight is definitely an issue for me. I got a good look at a titanium AR once and I'm still drooling over that thing. It was a police department rifle. It was 4.5 lb.s and was full auto with a can. I thought about stealing it but I figured that wouldn't go over real well with the cop who showed it to me. :)

Boy there's always someone just waiting to call someone else a liar for no good reason. You want the guy's phone number that showed it to me? It's the chief of police at a local city. Maybe, just maybe you haven't seen everything in the world even if you have been in the service. I know what I saw. I know how it felt - light as a feather. The guy is the brother in law of my brother. He brought it to my brother's house on Christmas about 4 years ago. I didn't take pictures. He's also an accomplished banjo player that plays in a bluegrass band that has toured large parts of the world. You probably won't believe that either. Feel free to treat people like dirt just because you think you're special.

Got to go with CJ... sub 5lb ARs can be bought or built. Nothing new there.

On the other hand... $17.99 red dot manufactured by Aimpoint, A2 front sight .5moa per click, 25yd zero same as 100yd zero.... on and on... Heck, a 4.5lb AR is one of the few things rooted in reality that I have read lately. :D

How did this thread get so off track?

Let's move along....
