If anyone has read any of my recent posts then you will know I'm a new M&P 15-22 owner and fan of the forum! Without paying attention to some advice to stay away from the "Pic Threads" because it will temp me to spend, I looked anyway. :) You all have done some terrific stuff to your "baby."

So I did not opt for a scope that's the cheapest but did get the Vortex Strikefire. Seems to have a great warranty also. I know it's after the fact but would like your impressions/opinions of that red dot. I respect what advice I get from my LGS as well as what I read here. I also do the YouTube route when researching most anything to do with a purchase.

So let me have it, good or bad move.

Thanks,

That's a nice red dot, especially for the price!

Vortex makes great products and their warranty is awesome. I have a couple Vortex scopes and they are nice. Also just picked up a Vortex Razor RDS and its going on a 629.

I haven't had any experience with their warranty, but it was part of the reason I spent the $$ for one of their scopes. I have the Viper HS LR 4-16x44 on a LaRue mount, and it's been absolutely perfect.

I don't have a Strikefire, but I have a SPARC on my Viking Tactics MP-15 that I really like. I thought I had a problem with it, so I sent it back without calling and talking to someone first. Turns out I only had a weak battery, they replaced the battery and sent it back to me with no charge.

I am a big fan of their optics, I have 4 Vortex scopes ranging from the Crossfire II to the Viper and a Viper PST FFP. I am sold and slowly converting all of my "shooting" rifles to Vortex optics.

I have a Vortex Strikefire and I am very happy with it. I mounted it on my 15-22 and I can drive tacks with it now. My Vortex red dot is mounted high so I have lower 1/3 co-witness with my factory iron sights. Some will argue for absolute co-witness but I prefer the 1/3.

Thanks for the replies.

I went to the range today and sighted or tried to sight my Strikefire in. I was shooting low at 15 yds and high at 25 yds. I didn't realize that 15 yds was too close for what I was trying to do, so I'm told. Later in the day I went to my LGS and did some talking and again sighted the red dot in. This time we did it at 50 yards. He was using a glass to check my groupings etc. At this distance my groupings were good and I was close to dead center of the target.

Has that been your experience with red dots and the Strikefire? I'm not exactly sure when you talk about 1/3 co-witness. My red dot is mounted above the iron sights so I can use either the red dot or the iron.

Thanks,

Howard

That would be normal with any red dot placed on a significant riser above the bore (or on one of the higher mounts that Vortex provides). The dot is too high above the line of fire to be zeroed at the closer distances. You'd have to place it pretty much directly on the rail to make this work.

The following image, courtesy of Larue Tactical, helps to explain what lower 1/3 is vs. true co-witness, as it relates to using both a red dot sight and your iron sights together:

I've got a strike fire on my AR 15 and its sighted in at 100 yds. The only problems is the dot is the size of the target at that range. I going to bring the magnafier next time as my eyes are old and kinda weak. I'm looking for a scope for my DPMS lr 308 and I'm leaning trawards the vortec ffp 4-16 power, Any input would be appreciated.
